  1. Building Atmosphere L.O – To use a wide range of sentence structures. Level four: I sometimes vary the length, structure and subject of sentences. I use connectives to introduce extra information, for example, ‘if’, ‘when’, ‘because’ Level five: I use some features of sentences to build up meaning and detail. I can use connectives to link ideas together. I use a variety of sentence lengths/structures to make meanings clear. Does anyone know what pathetic fallacy is?

  2. Now... Write a paragraph where you describe how you are feeling using the weather. As I gazed out of the window I could see... I think you feel ... because...

  3. Sentences • Where do commas go? • When do you use a short sentence? • What types of sentence have a connective in? • What comes after a question mark? • Where is a semi colon used? • How can you tell when it is the end of a sentence?

  4. Short/simple sentences Used to help build up tension and to clarify points. Dead. How? The cat sat on the mat. Write your own.

  5. Compound sentences Where you link two simple sentences with a connective. These make sense individually. The cat sat on the mat and he took a long drink of milk. Come up with your own.

  6. Complex Sentences Sentences where additional information is added through using commas or semi colons. These are used to add more detail. The day was a long one; I was awake from three in the morning and hadn’t been able to get back to sleep before school. Write your own.

  7. Challenge Your challenge is to write the first two paragraphs setting the scene of our crime. 8 simple sentences 7 compound 9 complex – one of which uses a semi colon.

  8. S.A Highlight/colour the different types of sentences. How successful is what you have written compared to what you have written before? Look at the criteria.
