  1. Mental Health Awareness – Why It Is Important?

  2. People generally avoid discussing the mental health issues associated with it. Since people generally are busy in their life to fulfill their basic needs, they don’t have sufficient energy or time to think or discuss mental health. People think that depression, stress anxiety, and so on are common phases that everyone faces for a long or short time. But when these people struggle with the health concerns like cold, acidity, fever, cough, etc then they will rush to the general physician to get the treatment. They generally think that they are not weak from mind to have any mental illness. It is important for everyone to understand that like we get physical issues, we may also get mental health issues. Also know that 80% of the physical health concerns are due to the underlying mental disorder.

  3. According to a statics share by the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 4 individuals faces mental health illness at some time or other in their life. Hence, mental health awareness has gained more importance nowadays so that one can educate people on how to handle their issues easily. What is mental health? Mental health is more than just the absence of mental illness. According to the WHO, mental health is the state of well-being in which an individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work fruitfully and productively, and is able to make a contribution to their community.

A mental health illness is a type of physical illness of the brain that causes disturbances in behavior, thinking, energy or emotion that makes it difficult to cope with the usual demands of life. Many kinds of research are made to uncover the complicated causes of these diseases that include brain chemistry, genetics, brain structure, having another medical condition, or experiencing trauma. It is said mental health illnesses affect around 20% of the adult population, 26% of the teenagers, and around 12-13% of the children every year. People who are suffering from any mental issues can be your family, live next door, work in the next cabin at the office, teach your children or sit or walk beside you when you are outside.

  5. However, only half of them recognize their mental disorder at the right time and receive treatment or take necessary steps to reduce it. But know that untreated mental illnesses will contribute to other physical health issues that will reduce your regular energy in the body or performance. At a higher risk of depression or stress, people may have suicidal thoughts. Hence, it’s important to cure it as soon as possible. Common mental health conditions: Mood disorders – The mood disorders such as bipolar depression and depression affect nearly 10% of the adult population every year and is generally characterized by difficulties in maintaining one’s mood. Anxiety disorders – More than 18% of adults struggle with anxiety disorders each year which includes Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), panic attacks or panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and generalized anxiety disorder.

  6. What can you do to help in controlling mental illnesses? Although the general perception of mental illnesses has improved over the past decades, studies still show that the stigma against mental illnesses is powerful which is largely due to the media stereotypes and lack of mental health awareness. Also, people tend to have negative stigmas to the mental disorder at a higher rate than to other diseases and disabilities. Stigma affects not only the number of people seeking the treatment but also the number of resources that are available to offer proper treatment. Here are some of the things you can do to help:

  7. Self-love – It is important to love yourself as you love your family or friends. Many people forget that self-love is more important to lead a normal life. It will also help in overcoming depression and stress that brings general physical issues. Yoga – Cultivating the habit of meditation and Yoga is said to effectively help in reducing mental illness. You can join the Yoga classes near you or online classes. Making time for Yoga and meditation is essential to stay calm in life. This will reduce your depression and stress so that you can focus on your life and move towards your goal. Spend time on a hobby – It is important to know that spending time for yourself is important in life. You can spend time on your hobby like listening to music, reading books, playing indoor or outdoor games, knitting, cooking, sports or any other hobby. This will break your regular mood and make you active and relieved from stress.

  8. Spend time with friends or loved ones – In this busy life, we almost forget to spend time with our family, friends or loved ones. But spending time with them will improve your mood, make you feel relaxed and stress-free. Hence, make sure that you spend time with your beloved ones. Learn new skills – If you are not interested in anything, then you can spend time improving your skills. Other than learning technological skills, you can learn other skills which you like to master. It can be drawing, dancing, playing musical instruments, working out and so on. Get professional help – You don’t need to be shy. Seeking professional advice for mental illness in general and you don’t need to be shy about it. You can receive the treatment and seek help to restore your cognitive strength. When you get professional help, you will feel confident and have more control of your situation.

  9. Watch motivational videos – In today’s world, you can get everything on the internet. You can find inspirational and motivational videos on YouTube. There are many motivational speakers who upload videos regularly on their channels. Hence, you can watch these videos to get motivated and overcome your depression. Thus, no matter how you feel know that you can get better with proper mental health awareness and taking necessary steps in handling stress and depression.
