Finding Volume by Displacement

Finding Volume by Displacement. Cornell Notes page 17. Displacement. when an object is submerged in water, it displaces (pushes away) a volume of water equal to the volume of the object. We can use this to find the volume of irregular shaped objects 1 mL of water = 1 cm3.

  1. Finding Volume by Displacement Cornell Notes page 17

  2. Displacement • when an object is submerged in water, it displaces (pushes away) a volume of water equal to the volume of the object. • We can use this to find the volume of irregular shaped objects • 1 mL of water = 1 cm3

  3. To find volume using Displacement… • Fill graduated cylinder with water (enough to submerge object, not enough to overflow). • Record initial water level. • Submerge object in water. • Record final water level.

  4. To find volume using Displacement… • Subtract the initial measurement from the final measurement • change unit from mL to cm3 • Difference between the two measurements IS the volume of the object!
