  6. Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. • Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.

  7. Clara Barton • She worked tirelessly as a nurse during the Civil War. • Started an agency to supply distribute supplies to wounded soldiers. • In 1881, she started the American Red Cross –health organization run by volunteers to provide blood and health programs to those in need. The ARC is highly active today.

  8. War of Attrition • Lincoln promoted Ulysses Grant to command the Union after several generals proved failures. • Grant planned a war of attrition – to continue fighting until the South ran out of men, supplies, and the will to fight • Lee’s Confederate army steadily dwindled in able-bodied men, and few reserves remained
