  2. Identify CCSG Point Person • CCSG quarterback keeps track of all sections of the application and the version under review • Attends all CCSG meetings and advises on status of the application • Responsible for collecting, distributing and finalizing all sections

  3. Six Essential Characteristics • Most important part of application; read by all reviewers • Cancer Focus • NCI funding relative to total funding • # of NCI funded members • # of cancer publications • Institutional Commitment • director’s position in institutional hierarchy • space • financial support • Center driven support services • administrative and financial organization of the Center

  4. Shared Resources • Essential service • Utilization by $$ and # of members • CCSG should be a reasonable part of total budget • Charts describing budget components must be correct and auditable • Service fee structure must be described

  5. Administration • Cannot duplicate institutional and overhead services • Stick to CCSG/cancer research related activities • 15% of budget is a good rule of thumb

  6. Membership • Describe in detail the membership process and benefits of membership by category • CCSG vs. Cancer Center membership • Forms 2 and 4 should be CC members

  7. Budget • Ensure that all interested parties (e.g., shared resource leaders) are on board • Check on future inflation and fringe benefit factors • Justify everything

  8. CCSG Review Criteria • Review the CCSG Evaluation Criteria with all stakeholders prior to final assembly • Create a checklist against which to confirm that the application meets all evaluation criteria

  9. My High Value Sections • Cancer Focus • Institutional Commitment • Authority of the Director • Planning and Evaluation • All Standard Forms • PRMS and clinical trials demographics

  10. Controlling the Process • Need 1 central clearinghouse • Carefully title each version with version # and date • Create a system or spreadsheet to know where each version is • Try to send out sequentially. Difficult to edit multiple versions simultaneously • Mark final version as FINAL and do not distribute further

  11. Assembling the Application • Number final version through Adobe pdf. page numbering app • Review application one last time before printing • Try to get the printing done professionally • Copy pdf. version to a disk • Color copies may not reach reviewers in color
