  5. Mythological • Uses a collections of symbols, images, characters, that evokes the same response in everyone • Source of literature’s power • Overall response due to the widely known stories passed down • Originals: God, Bible, Greek Gods

  6. Archetypal • The original mold and model of a character • Hero/ Warrior – Quest in which experiences a transformation • Good/Bad Mother • Romeo & Juliet - star crossed lovers • King – Sparks the ideas • Child – innocence

  7. Symbolic • Mental representations that possess meaning for mental objects • Found in language, reasoning, and visions • Examples: Serpent, Garden, Angel, Circle, 7, Red, Black, Light

  8. Advantages/ Disadvantages • Advantages: Provides a universalistic view point to literature. • Disadvantages: May force the readers to be bias.
