The town of ТАМBOV... It was founded by the decree of tsar Mikhail Fedorovich on the 17th of April. 1636 (old style) on a high bank of the river Tsna where it confluenes with Studenets. The fortress was to defend the Moscow state's southern borders from Tatar forays on the side of steppes. Roman Boborykin, the tsar's court menial (stolnik) and voiode became the first builder of the town. Thanks to his experience, the fortress construction was finished in the shortest time and was sanctified on t'he 1st of October 1637 on the Day of the Protecting Veil of the St Virgin
In 1779 the Tambov vicegerency was formed and on the 16th of August 1781 Yekaterina II by her "Be so" verdict confirmed the town's emblem: "There are a hive and three gold bees on an azure field, the ground is green...' On the 12th of December, I796 the Tambov vicegerency was transformed into the province with its own government. In March 1786 me disgraced Russian poet and statesman Gavrila Derzhavin arrived in Tambov as a vicegerent. He was not there for a long time, only till December 1788. But even within that period ha managed to do much: the town's
development was being earned on; there appeared a theatre a college, a dancing school, a printing house, a newspaper, an orchestra, a brick-yard... in memory of this outstanding person there was constructed a monument m the Street named after him. Today Tambov is a large industrial and cultural centre of Russia Its history is closely connected with such wet-known persons as architect, sculptor and artist V. Shervud, architect V. Shchuko, writer S. Sergeev-Tsensky, poetess M. Rumyantseva, composer I. Shatrov
