  1. Think, Pair, Share • Look at the mandala example. What do you see? • What is a mandala OR what do you think one is based on your observations?

  2. In small groups - “What are some things a circlecan symbolize or represent?”

What is a madala? • The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. • Loosely translated to mean ‘circle,’a mandala is far more than a simple shape. • Mandalas are broadly defined as a geometric design that symbolizes the universe. • It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself--a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds.”

  4. What is a symbol? • Identify various symbols in the mandala shown for the “Think, Pair, Share.” • What do you think each of these symbols represent?

ASSIGNMENT: Psychology of Color Mandala In your Mandala (circle), use colors according to the psychology of color that we just learned, AND the colored pencil techniques to create a drawing or design that expresses your feelings about ONE of the following: a) the Regents exams b) your relationship with your parents c) living in NYC/the Bronx d) Ms. Salov leaving MHBX e) Your choice… but you must get approval first!

ASSIGNMENT CHECKLIST: Psychology of Color Mandala • Do a draft of your Mandala in your WB • Brainstorm with a T-Chart or other graphic organizer • Draw 1 or several Mandalas to scale, or smaller, and sketch your ideas quickly until you are happy with the results and are clear with your design choices. You do NOT need to create a fully finished piece in your WB. • Practice using the colors, and colored pencil techniques you intend to use on your final piece. • Write a brief statement about what your Mandala means and what your symbols and/or colors represent.

ASSIGNMENT CHECKLIST: Psychology of Color Mandala • Create your final piece on separate drawing paper. • Use colors according to the Psychology of Color • Use at least 3 of the colored pencil techniques • Express your feelings honestly and as thoroughly (completely) as you can about one of the choices. • Complete a write-up about your piece describing what the Mandala means, and what each symbol and/or color represents. (separate handout)
