  1. PLUG INsA Student’s Guide to Information Literacy ACADEMIC HONESTY & PLAGIARISM

  2. What is the meaning of honest (adjective) or honesty (noun) ? An honest person is someone who does not lie, cheat or steal. An honest person always tells the truth.

  3. Academic honesty refers to things that happen at a school or college. An honest student does not cheat or steal the academic work of others.

  4. What are some examples of cheating? If a student gets answers to test questions from another student, this is cheating. If a student copies another student’s project, this is cheating.

  5. Go to the online Student Handbook for more information about cheating. http://studenthandbook.hct.ac.ae/common/stand_5.html

  6. What about copying from a book or a website without crediting the source? This kind of cheating is called PLAGIARISM. It is stealing the words or ideas of another person.

  7. Here are details from the Student Handbook.

  8. Let’s look at this more carefully. Examples of plagiarism may include but are not limited to the following 3 situations only. Anytime you copy and do not note the source(s) of the information, you are plagiarizing. هذه بعض الامثله للغش و لكن غير محدودة على هذه الأنواع فقط إذا حاولت في أي وقت اخذ أي مصدر من غير أن توثقه فهذا يعتبر غش

  9. Plagiarism is : using the work of someone else, or changing some words and keeping the same structure and the same meaning without noting the source(s), and submitting it as your own work. استخدام عمل شخص أخر مع تغيير بعض الكلمات و المحافظة على نفس الترتيب للجملة و نفس المعني من غير ذكر المصدر وانتساب العمل لك

  10. Plagiarism is : taking text from many other sources and putting pieces together as one document and submitting it as your own work, without noting the source(s). اخذ الجمل من مصادر عديده و وضعها في ملف واحد و تسليمها من غير ذكر المصدر

  11. Plagiarism is : downloading information, pictures or charts from the Internet and inserting that material into your own document and submitting it as your own work without noting the source(s). • تحميل الملفات من الانترنت مثل الصور و الجدول و الرسم البياني و استخدامها في ملفك الخاص و تسليمها عمل خاص بك دوم ذكر المصدر.

  12. Would you steal a car? Would you steal a laptop? Would you steal a mobile phone? Of course not. But if you copy from a book or the Internet without crediting the source, you are stealing the words of a writer.

  13. HCT considers plagiarism the same as other forms of cheating. Students can be forced to leave the college if they plagiarize. Students will not be allowed to go to other colleges in the UAE if they have left a college because of plagiarism.

  14. Again, plagiarism, or stealing the words of others, is a serious issue for HCT students. How can you avoid plagiarism? Fortunately, it is simple.

  15. The best way to avoid plagiarism is to paraphrase what you read. This means that you write the ideas in your own words. You can make the original shorter and simpler. Your English teachers can explain how to paraphrase.

  16. Ask your teacher to show you or give you PlugIn 37 USING THE ONLINE THESAURUS AND DICTIONARY IN WORD. This will help you learn how to paraphrase.

  17. If you need to use the exact words in a text, you must put “quotation marks” around these words. You must also indicate the source of the words (original of paraphrase). This is called a REFERENCE or a CITATION.

  18. Ask your teacher to show you or give the PlugIn lessons about writing IN-TEXT REFERENCES OR CITATIONS. And, PlugIn lessons about writing a REFERENCE LIST or BIBLIOGRAPHY.

  19. I hope this helps you understand about academic honesty. Remember plagiarism (copying from a print or online resource) is the same as cheating. Learn how to paraphrase and write references of the sources of your information.

  20. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING !
