  3. Walking in the Hallway • Arm close to side, natural • Be careful turning corners, don’t walk into things • Make sure the follower is not running their hand along the wall

  4. Doorways and Narrow Spaces • Maintain communication throughout • It’s easiest to keep traveler on hinge side of the doorway • Move arm to center of back to indicate a narrow space

  6. Traveling Up and Down Stairs • Hand on rail • Explain direction • One step ahead

  7. Assisting with a Chair • Explain which direction the chair is facing • Have traveler find the back of the chair • Describe the height of the chair • Example: The chair is facing you and is about knee high, if you reach out you can feel the back of the chair

  8. Room Familiarization • Establish your reference point • Example: The doorway is the center of the south wall and will be our reference point. • Use N, S, E, & W or Hands of a Clock for directions • Directions are based off the reference point and they do not have to be true direction. • Explain the room and its layout • Give a description of the room and what’s in it. • Note where the permanent and movable objects are located.
