  1. MJ2A Ch 5.10 – Arithmetic & Geometric Sequences

  2. Bellwork • Write and solve the following: • 4 1/6 = r + 6 1/4 • 1/3 + h = 5/6 • 5/6q = 15/42 • 7/8d = 56

  3. Assignment Review • Text p. 246 # 14 – 40

  4. Activity • Today you will work with a partner on an activity… • The purpose of the activity is for you to make observations about sequences… • It is expected that you are on task and working during the activity • If you cannot control yourself you will be sent to a time out with an alternative assignment (Text p. 251-252 # 1 – 49) • Please do not put me in that position

  5. Activity • Working with a partner complete the lab sheet. • Before you do anything make sure that you read the lab sheet and understand what is expected • You will have 10 minutes to complete this lab. • This lab counts as a test grade • The completed lab is due at the end of the period

  6. After the Activity • Raise your hand if you liked this activity. Why? • Raise your hand if you did not like this activity. Why? • My Comments • Raise your hand if you can tell me what you learned…

  7. Before we begin… • Please take out your notebook and get ready to work… • In today’s lesson we will wrap up our look Chapter 5 and rational numbers by looking at sequences • A sequence is an ordered list of numbers…

  8. Objective 5 – 10 • Students will find the terms of arithmetic and geometric sequences.

  9. Arithmetic Sequence • Arithmetic Sequence – is a sequence in which the difference between any two consecutive terms is the same. Based upon that information you can determine the next term in the sequence by adding the difference to the previous term. • Example: 20, 30, 40, 50,… • The difference is 10. Therefore the next 3 terms will be 60, 70, and 80

  10. Your Turn • In the notes section of your notebook write the sequence and determine the next 3 terms • 8, 5, 2, -1, -4 • -4, -7, -10, -13

  11. Geometric Sequence • Geometric Sequence – is a sequence in which the quotient of any two consecutive terms is the same. So, you can find the next term in the sequence by multiplying the previous term by the same number • Example: 1, 4, 16, 64 … • The quotient is 4. Therefore, the next 3 terms are 264, 1024, 4096

  12. Your Turn • In the notes section of your notebook write the sequence and then determine the next 3 terms. • -2, 6, -18, -54 • 54, -162, 486, -1458

  13. Comments • It is possible to have a sequence that is neither arithmetic nor geometric Example: 1, 2, 4, 7, 11… • The terms increase by 1, 2, 3, 4… • Therefore, this sequence would be neither arithmetic or geometric

  14. Summary • In the notes section of your notebook summarize the key concepts covered in today’s lesson • Today we discussed • Arithmetic sequences – what are they? • Geometric sequences – What are they?

  15. Assignment • Practice Skills workbook lesson 5-10 Reminder: • This assignment is due tomorrow • I do not accept late assignments
