Bataan Death March • 70,000 Filipinos and Americans surrendered to Japan at noon on April 9th • They were forced to march 60 miles with no water and hardly any food • Between 5,000 and 11,000 soldiers never made it • They killed anyone who got food, lagged behind, broke ranks, or drank water off the side of the road Marker on Bataan Death March • They were surrounded by barb wire at night • They got beaten for not standing straight Break on Death March

Music • Written by Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen • Written to make fun of Hitler • Bud Flanagan always wore a fur coat when singing this song • Also wrote Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Mr. Hitler?   4. Book • Elie Wiesel (Night)  • Popular book for middle schoolers to read • About a teenager who survived the holocaust. It tells what his life was like during WWII from the start to the finish Author 

Invasion of the Philippines • Roosevelt gave MacArthur permission to surrender Filipino troops but not American • MacArthur had predicted where Japanese would strike and land before it happened but froze when the attack came and didn’t give orders • When he finally started giving orders, he told troops to fight back as long as possible. Some people thought this was part of the reason he lost. They thought he should have moved supplies and food to Corregidor which would have greatly helped later in the war. • December 8, 1941 - May 8, 1942 • The attack by Japan came hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor • Japanese then landed and took over airfields to keep the upper hand • Allies invading the Philippines

General Douglas MacArthur American • Promotions: 1904 promoted to the rank of first lieutenant, later promoted to major, brigadier in August, 1918, three months later he became divisional commander in France. He became brigadier general, at 43 he became general and in 1928 became president of the American Olympic Committee. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the US Army in 1930 and Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area. He was named Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) then became head of the Allied occupation of Japan. • He retired from the army in 1937 • MacArthur, controversially used tanks, four troops of cavalry with drawn sabers, and infantry with fixed bayonets, on the Bonus Army in Washington • Picture of MacArthur

General Douglas MacArthur American Cont. • June 1941, Roosevelt recalled MacArthur to active duty as a major general. • 8th December 1941 Japan carried out air strikes on the Philippines and destroyed half of MacArthur's air force. MacArthur was much criticized for this as he had been told to move his airforce after the raid on Hawaii the previous day. • 22nd February, 1942, MacArthur was ordered to leave Bataan and go to Australia • MacArthur signing treaty with Japan  • 1944 MacArthur was given permission to begin the campaign to recapture Philippines.

General Masaharu Homma Japanese • General Masaharu Homma was supreme Japanese commander of the Philippines and he defeated MacArthur • MacArthur later took revenge on Homma • Homma said he had no idea of the death march • MacArthur decided Homma's fate • five American generals were his judges, jury, and executioners. • General Homma at his trial

General Masaharu Homma Japanese Cont. • It was hard to prosecute him, though, because he had been fighting a war he did not want to fight and for a dictatorial government he disliked • Even though he had all those reasons, he still had to pay his life for Japan • Homma remains a hero in Japan because he is the only Japanese general to ever decisively defeat an American army.

Personal Connection • My Great Uncle fought in WWII • The Enterprise aka The Big E  • He was a signalman on the Enterprise • I did my interview with him and learned a lot about this war • He told me a lot about what life was like on a ship • The Enterprise even has its own show on Discovery called Battle 360 
