3. Surveys of Faculty, Parents, and Community Members • Formal and informal surveys and various sources of data revealed… • Many students were not fully applying themselves in the classrooms of BCMS. Little effort to no effort (zeroes) to perform in class and little effort to get there on time (tardies). • Many parents and community members who were not armed with data held the perception that BCMS accepted mediocrity as our highest standard.

4. But what about BCMS’s Recognized Status? • BCMS received a Recognized Rating with the help of • TPM. • Based on communication that has been put out by the • Commissioner of Education and the Governor, TPM will • be no more. • With last years scores applied to this year’s standard • and the removal of TPM, BCMS would be a Academically • Unacceptable Campus.

5. We are a school that has agreed to function on Fundamental Beliefs… 1. We can make a difference and we can be more effective in the educational impact with have on students. 2. Improving our people (administrators, teachers, parents and students) is the key to improving our schools. 3. Significant school improvement will undoubtedly impact teaching and learning. 6. MEDIOCRITY IS THE ENEMY OF EXCELLENCE!

7. The “No zero Zone” was developed to promote and communicate EXCELLENCE asthe standard at BCMS .

8. The Facts… • Effort creates ability. • The NO ZERO ZONE was developed to address a lack of effort on behalf of our students. • Students are placed in the NO ZERO ZONE for zeroes received in the core subject areas only. • Students cannotbe placed in NO ZERO ZONE if the grade was not posted on Family Access or a zero is the result of an unexcused absence and the student has been given time to make it up. • Currently students who receive a three zeroes in a semester in the core subjects of math or reading, will be removed from extracurricular or co-curricular electives and UIL sponsored activities and placed in Reading 180 or Math Connections.

9. The Facts Continued… • A parent conference will be scheduled with the parent of each and every student after the second visit to the NZZ in an effort to find out what additional supports the student may need to make them a more successful student and to also inform the parent of the interventions that will take place if a child is assigned to the NZZ three times in a semester. • After successfully completing a period of six weeks without being assigned to the NZZ, the student will be exited from Math Connections or Reading 180 and placed back into the elective and be eligible to compete in UIL competitions.

10. Educational Plan Advocating Excellence By aligning our efforts at BCMS with the tenants of the University Interscholastic League, we know we will be sending students to competition who truly represent the values of the UIL. The League seeks to enhance the educational experience of students while promoting self-disciplineand hard work… EFFORT.

11. We live in a different time-Once upon a time, students only competed with local students (district-wide, city-wide, and state-wide) for valuable spots in Colleges and Universities. The pool of competition is now larger and greater as our students/children now face global competition.

12. We are attempting to fill the future of our students with more decisions…What do I want to be when I grow up? What University would I like to attend?

13. Because we know that mediocrity greatly limits or eliminates the possible answers/responses to those two questions.

14. EFFORT will put us on the path to EXEMPLARY!!!
