Alternative Education Department Santa Clara County Office of Education Santa Clara County Preview • Focus and Approach • Focus Area II: Planning, Collaborative Model • Student engagement and oral language production • Incorporating effective instructional practices • Needs • Support and improve English learners academic achievement in all content areas • Increase student satisfaction and confidence through academic rigor and success • Recognize and address the academic and social/emotional needs of long-term ELs • Promote student learning through culturally relevant pedagogy and real-life application • Establish high academic expectations for long- term English learners • Outcomes • Increase student academic confidence with success in content areas • Prepare students with educational competence that prepares them for vocational/collegial opportunities Improve instructional strategies and practices • Use multiple learning modalities to increase student engagement • Provide teachers professional development with academic focus • Participant Identification • Alternative Education Department: • Teachers at Edge Community School representing Juvenile Court and community schools in English, Math, and Science • Results • Increased Planned Language Production (PLP) • Increased student engagement • Created opportunities for students to use culturally affirming texts • Increased awareness of strategy strengths and concerns developed through the reflection process • Lessons Learned/Next Steps • Lessons Learned: • Align lesson objectives and student work expectations • Emphasize teaching language structures • Incorporate structured language opportunities • Next steps: • Continue and expand implementing the A.L.L. cycle • Incorporate and discuss A.L.L. strategies in curriculum meetings • Continue to build A.L.L. awareness/relevance • Action Steps • Attended a three-day Trainer of Trainers • Completed one A.L.L. cycle: Plan, Teach, Analyze, Reflect/Act • Presented at site cluster • Engaged in 30 hours of collaboration • Reflected and revised lesson plans to meet students’ needs
