  1. Drawing Conclusions, Making Inferences, and Predicting

  2. Author’s do not explain everythingin a story. • Readers use story clues. – They use details about what they’ve read. • Readers use their own personal experience. – They make “text to self” connections. • Readers use prior knowledge. – They make “text to text” connections. • The combination of these strategies allow readers to make an inference (reasonable guesses), predict, or draw a conclusion about characters and events.

  3. For Example: I sleep in a crib. I drink from a bottle. I cannot walk or talk. Who am I? I know babies sleep in cribs. I know babies drink bottles. I know babies can’t do these things yet. Must be a baby!

  4. Let's Try Again! Put me on your feet. I will keep you warm and dry. Wear me when it rains. I know you wear socks and shoes on your feet. Both of these keep you warm, but only shoes keep you dry. What do you wear, on your feet, when it rains? rainboots!

  5. Your Turn!!! You need me before you can mail a letter. Paste me on an envelope. What am I? You need a postman, an envelope, and a stamp to mail a letter! Only one of these would be pasted onto an envelope! What did you know in your head?

  6. Jake Tries to Catch a Fish Jake stood on the riverbank. He cast his fishing pole into the deep water. He had been trying to catch a fish for many hours. Alex and Zach laughed as they watched Jake throw the line into the water one more time.

  7. What kind of person is Jake? • Patient • Hard working Jake stood on the riverbank. He cast his fishing into the deep water. He had been trying to catch a fish for many hours. Alex and Zach laughed as the watched Jake throw the line into the water one more.

  8. How do you think Alex and Zach feelabout Jake’s efforts to catch a fish? • He is wasting his time. • He won’t catch a fish. Jake stood on the riverbank. He cast his fishing into the deep water. He had been trying to catch a fish for many hours. Alex and Zach laughed as the watched Jake throw the line into the water one more.

  9. The bus driver pulled out of the station. Jim’s heart beat fast. He had never traveled alone. He waved good-bye to his grandparents. “The bus will be in Tucson in two hours,” Jim told himself. He checked his watch. Jim pictured his father waiting for the bus in Tucson. “Two hours will be over in no time,” Jim said.

  10. 0 Game Time! • Let’s play a game to find out how good we are at making inferences: What Can You Infer?
