  2. YOU WANT ME TO DO WHAT?

  3. GOALS • Deconstruct a Standard • Compare 0ur work to a (Vail) Unwrapped Document • Look for Connections between the unwrapped standard and the standard we teach in our grade level.

  4. Purpose • We want to gain an appreciation for the planning that has been done for us ahead of time and to better understand the level of rigor that our objectives are being expected to be taught at.

  5. Deconstruct a Standard by… • Identifying the nouns, adjectives, and adverbs (content and skills and the verbs and verb phrases. • Write the Big Idea. • Identify smooth transitions between grade levels and standards . • Look for gaps or holes.

  6. Tools we will be using • Highlighters • Standards Documents • Deconstructing notes Document • Unwrapped documents for checking work later.

  7. What are the Nouns and Verbs? Highlight the nouns and verbs that give you a clue as to what they student will be required to know or do. In your groups list these items on your deconstructing standards note sheet.

  8. Write the BIG IDEA! • Write the big idea that you come away with after looking at this information.

  9. Transitions • What will your students need to know from this objective to be successful in the next grade level? Are there any mathematical practices that might be helpful for them to have mastery in to progress more quickly? • What specific objectives will have to be taught on a day by day basis?

  10. GAPS • Have there been gaps in understanding related to this objective that have limited growth with in your classroom ? How can we deal with them?

  11. Let’s Compare

  12. Connections • What connections if any do we see between the current standard and other standards from our grade level?

  13. In Conclusion… Unwrapped Documents are a guide that help us determine what needs to be taught and at what level of rigor students will be expected to be able to perform come assessment time and beyond. We can use these document to have conversations about identifying gaps in learning quickly and make decisions as to what if anything can be done to begin to close those gaps as we compare student progress with final expected outcomes.
