  1. Earth Science Rocks!Warm up March 13 Question: Now what do you think causes the Earth’s seasons?

  2. Get Ready…

  3. Prepare for a NEW STANDARD and Unit question!!!

  4. Earth Science Rocks! Standard: Students will understand the effects of the relative positions of the earth, moon, & sun. c. Relate the tilt of the earth to the distribution of sunlight throughout the year and its effect on climate.

  5. Earth Science Rocks! MYP Unit Question: What’s out there?

  6. Area of Interaction: Human Ingenuity

  7. Learner Profile terms: • Thinker • Risk Taker • Open minded

  8. Earth Science Rocks! Learning Standard: Today I’m learning about the tilt of Earth on its axis because it causes seasons. Opening:What causes seasons video Work Session: * Notes over Seasons Closing:Seasons Rap Song

  9. What is the tilt of the Earth’s axis?

  10. What is the tilt of the Moon’s axis?

  11. Does the moon rotate? • The moon’s rotation = the moon’s revolution around the Earth

  12. Why does the moon stay in orbit around the Earth? Where is the sun?

  13. Where did the moon come from? Before scientists had rock samples from the moon, there were 3 popular explanations for the moon’s formation: • The moon was a separate body captured by the Earth’s gravity • The moon formed at the same time from the same materials as the Earth • The newly formed Earth was spinning so fast that a piece of it flew off and became the moon.

  14. When rock samples from the moon were brought back from the Apollo mission, the mystery was solved.

  15. The current theory is a large Mars sized object collided with Earth while the Earth was still forming.

  16. The collision was so violent that part of the Earth’s mantle was blasted into orbit around Earth to form the moon

  17. Draw a color picture of the Earth rotating on its axis. Also include the Sun in your diagram. Be sure to label the Earth, axis, day, night, and show Earth’s tilt. Arrows should be used to show the rotation. Draw a color picture of the Earth revolving around the Sun. Be sure to label the Sun, orbit, Earth, axis, and show the Earth’s tilt. Arrows should be used to show the direction of the orbit. Rap Song
