  2. Purpose To assess the marketing practices of fast food outlets near middle and high schools, parks and playgrounds in your selected neighborhoods. High school or middle school preferred Elementary schools are optional

Fast Food Outlets Defined A fast-food outlet is a quick service restaurant: • Pay at the counter • Offers food that is ready to eat quickly after ordering • Minimal service • Requires that customer pays for food prior to its consumption • Main items include entrees such as sandwiches • Do not include donut, snack, coffee or other specialty restaurants unless they serve entrees on their menu

Fast Food Outlets Defined (continued) • Do not survey bakeries or cafés unless they serve a full menu of food (such as sandwiches, salads, soups, etc.) on a menu board or paper menu • Does it have a “fast food feel”? • Is food served wrapped in paper, in a disposable box, on a tray with a paper liner, with ketchup/mayo packets? Drive thru? • If any doubt, go ahead and survey • Can make final decision at state office

  8. 6) Types of fast food outlets 1) Fast food chain: • 20 or more outlets/units • Includes burgers, fried chicken/fish, • taco/Mexican/Latino, fast Chinese • Example: Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, Carl's Jr., Taco Bell, Panda Express, El Pollo Loco, In & Out, Arby’s, Sonic, Popeye’s, Long John Silvers, Chick-fil-a, Wienerschnitzel, Dairy Queen (that serves a lot of food)

  9. 6) Types of fast food outlets 2) Fast food not chain: • 19 or fewer outlets/units • Includes same styles as fast food chain, but < 20 locations • Includes local taqueria’s that are not part of a larger chain network • Includes restaurants that are • not part of a franchise • not pizza • notdeli • not hot dog • not more than one style

  10. 6) Types of fast food outlets 3) Pizza Chain: • 20 or more outlets/units • Example: Domino's, Little Caesar's, Pizza Hut, Round Table Pizza, etc. 4) Pizza, other: • 19 or fewer outlets/units • Primary product is pizza

  11. 6) Types of fast food outlets 5) Subs/Deli/Sandwich Chain: • 20 or more outlets/units • Example: Subway, Quizno's, Togo's, Pita Pit, etc. .

  12. 6) Types of fast food outlets 6) Other: Does not fit into any of the above categories • Example: deli non-chain, hot dog outlets, more than one style, etc

  13. DO NOT SURVEY THESE Fast Casual Donut, ice cream, coffee cafes, or other specialty stores

  14. How many outlets? • Survey 15 outlets within 1/2 mile of each middle and high school, and park in each neighborhood. • Most will only have a few fast food outlets; some will have none • Some health departments want to survey ALL fast food outlets in neighborhood (optional) • Survey all if ≤ 15 in neighborhood • If more than 15 outlets, please contact CX3 staff • Use lists from Tier 1 • Check these lists against: • Google searches (and use local knowledge) • Environmental Health list from health department • Drive through neighborhood to identify locations

Exterior 12) Record the number and size of healthy and unhealthy ads • Doors and windows - Only on front of the fast food outlet • Professionally produced, depicting brands, logos or products • Use gray shaded area to record tic marks • Circle number of 0,1-2, 3-5, 6-9, 10+ • Circle “0” when no ads are present for category • Note: Size and number of ads is done the same as Store survey Use survey paper to choose ad size (Paper = 8 ½ X 11) Small( ≤ 1 sheet) Medium ( > 1 sheet, up to 10 sheets) Large( > 10 sheets of paper together)

Exterior Q 12) What’s the “front” of the outlet? • Front = side of building with front door (entrance) • If front door is situated at corner of building, survey the side that is used for the address • If more than 1 entrance, choose the one used for the address • If address side is not accessible, use entrance closest to parking area • If difficult to determine, pick either one

Interior • Federal Menu Labeling Law began 2011 • Fast food chains defined as “20 or more” • Must have number of calories contained in standard menu item on menu listing • Must have statement with suggested daily calorie intake posted • On survey tool, make sure you record FF chain, pizza chain, sub/sandwich chain
