  2. Work Context • development of a teaching and learning object repository, by OISE/UT for Ontario Knowledge Network for Learning (OKNL), Ministry of Education • designed to support students, teachers, parents and administrators • offers a core collection of selected educational resources linked to the curriculum

  3. Example: • Brock University’s Collection of Mathematics Learning Objects: http://www.brocku.ca/mathematics/resources/learningtools/learningobjects/index.php

  4. Ontario Education Portal • http://www.eduontario.ca • portal is effective as it provides access to resources from other repositories - federated searching capability • concept of “one-stop shopping”

  5. What is RSS? • Can stand for Rich Site Summary, RDF Site-Summary or Really Simple Syndication • RSS files are referred to as RSS feeds • Means to share and receive web site information/headlines using XML • Started as a means of syndicating news • Also used more broadly as a means to monitor changes to websites - maintain currency, keep sites dynamic

  6. Sample RSS Feed (MERLOT) • http://rss.merlot.org/publish/Biology.xml • RSS feed consists of a channel (title, link, description, language, image) and news items (title, link, description) • Channel: Most Recent Materials in Biology • Items: change once the RSS aggregator checks the site and finds new content

  7. RSS & Blogging • RSS is used by bloggers to keep up to date with their favourite blogs. • Blogging is becoming particularly important to the educational community • XML tags surround the text of each blog field • Bloglines is a good example of an online aggregator (feed reader) • See: http://www.bloglines.com/

  8. RSS - Sharing Metadata • OISE/UT currently exploring the possibilities of using RSS to share metadata records • http://www.eduontario.ca/rss/recentadditions.xml
