Rural Challenges • 2011 Census 61805, 7.4% growth, however 2% below NISRA’s mid-year estimate • Significant variation in those aged 18 – 27 (Education and Emigration) • Over-representation of those aged 50 – 65 • Over-reliance on traditional sectors (Agriculture and Construction) • Low representation of Public Sector jobs • Travel, social exclusion, loss of services F E D O24/04/2013

Rural Challenges • Tertiary education or emigration • Potential multiple employment barriers • 2011 Census Statistics point to a 22.55% fall in population in those aged 16 – 17 and 18 – 19 • Data suggests low qualifications and low educational standards highly correlated with relative deprivation F E D O24/04/2013

Rural Challenges • Issue is demand-based • 21st Century opportunities: • Cloud Computing, Financial Services, Back Office • Wind Power • Software Development • Social Media • Underpinning a peripheral economy: - Support for indigenous businesses/sectors • Failure to retain well-educated young people and inadequate economic opportunities F E D O24/04/2013

  9. Employer Issues • Failure to appreciate the discipline involved in many work situations • Educated to “know rather than to do“ • Deficiencies in grammar, spelling and numeracy • Inability to communicate effectively in writing F E D O24/04/2013

Developing an Entrepreneurial Culture • Fermanagh third highest business start-up rate in NI • Also in top quartile for business deaths. • Lobby for a stimulus package • Locally-based delivery structures • Focus on indigenous and endogenous growth. • Encourage the self-employment option F E D O24/04/2013
