  1. Document Delivery Management Systems NSWRSIG Survey results May 2013. Jane Barton, Coordinator Shared Client Service, University of Sydney Library

  2. Background • With a view to streamlining docdel workflows and reducing staff time spent on these workflows, many libraries are in the process of investigating or migrating to a new Interlibrary loan management system. • NSWRSIG decided to survey Australian Libraries to get a picture of : • Reasons for migrating/implementing a new system • Primary considerations when choosing a new system • Systems in use • Issues with implementation • Post implementation issues • Survey sent 15 May 2013 to doclibs and librariesaustraliadocdel-l

  3. The Questions …. • What type of Library are you from? • What ILL system does your Library currently use? • What do you like about your current system • What could your current system do better? • How do you currently deliver article scans to clients? • Have you recently implemented or are you looking at implementing a new ILL management system? • What are the primary reasons for moving to or considering a move to a new Document Delivery management system? • What Criteria will you/did you consider when selecting a new system? • What system did you end up selecting and why? • What problems, if any, did you experience with implementing your new system and has it lived up to expectations?

  4. Respondent Profile • 73 responses received • Library breakdown:

  5. The Results ….

  6. What systems are currently in use?

  7. What do you like about your current system ?

  8. What could your current system do better?

  9. How do you currently deliver article scans to clients?

  10. Have you recently / are you looking to, implement a new ILL Management system?

  11. For the following reasons …

  12. Selection Criteria

  13. What system did you end up selecting and why? Main reasons for selecting: fully hosted, cost, popularity amongst other libraries

  14. Problems encountered during implementation Just under half encountered problems with implementations. Primary problem: • Time taken to implement • Learning new system

  15. Has the system lived up to expectations? • Yes, Relais has lived up to our expectations. It is a very complex system to learn however, as we gained confidence in the various components we are very happy with its capabilities. We now look forward to the OCLC integration and possibly RapidILL to improve and streamline our document delivery service for our clients and our document delivery staff. (Relais) • The system has taken quite a bit of getting used to. We are happy with it, day to day straight forward requesting is good but we have found some annoying things like adding notes to track actions and progress. (VDX) • Yes and no. It is a large improvement on what we previously had but as MilILL remains non-ISO compliant, there is still a large amount of double handling (copying/pasting) having to replicate requests on LADD (Millennium / Sierra) • The ease of use is not great. We no longer get email alerts and we have to search LA especially for journals before we use the system (Aleph) • National Library's ISO testing requirements took a long time. (Relais)
