  2. Location: • Where is Mesopotamia located? Mesopotamia is located in the rolling hills between the Tigris and Euphrates River. (pg.33) • What did the Mesopotamia landscape look like? • There were farm lands and there were ditches to keep enemies out and to control the water also the water was for watering the crops. (pg.33)

  3. What is Mesopotamia ? What do YOU think????

  4. What does the word Mesopotamia mean? • Mesopotamia means : “land between two rivers” the two rivers are the Tigris and the Euphrates. (pg.33)

  5. Challenges… • . Why is Mesopotamia difficult? Farmers who moved to Sumer had one big problem the uncontrolled water supply because the snow from the mounting melted. (pg.34) • Why was there a food shortage in the foothills? The reason why is because there was barley land to grow crops. (pg.35)

  6. Challenges for Farmers Why did people move from the foothills? They moved from the hills because it was mostly rock instead of dirt. (pg.36) What were the four key problems? 1.The uncontrolled water, 2. The floods, 3. The crops being watered, 4. The canals get clogged with mud. (Pg.36-37)

  7. Overcoming challenges • . What were some challenges in Sumer? The challenges they faced was the water supply because sometimes floods will wash over their crops. (pg.36) • How did farmers resolve these challenges? They resolved these challenges by making irrigation system for controlling the water supply. (pg.36)

  8. Overcoming Challenges How did this change the farmers lives? This changed their lives because the water supply was controlled and also there were more farmers. (pgs.33,36,37) What happened as the Sumer grew? As the Sumer grew there was more protection, and more farmers and that means more crops.(pg.39)

  9. Priest… The priests were at the very top of the pyramid because they were the closet to the gods that the Mesopotamians believed in. In fact, they were the only people even allowed in the Ziggurat! The Ziggurat was right in the middle of the city and state.

  10. Extra Slaves Slaves were at the lowest social class in Mesopotamia Also did you know that they were captured after war and then take them as prisoners. Slaves had to work for three years and then they were free. Stable Food Supply Sumerians needed a stable food supply. Then they came with an invention called the plow. The plow helped the soil turn over to help plant the seeds. Also the plow was made of wood and one end was meant for cutting to turn the soil.
