  1. Habits of the mind By: Lindsey Mader, Selena Hise, Tess Mroczka, Cole Neubert, and Charlie Palmer

  2. CharlieWonderment and Awe • When using the habit wonderment and awe in a school setting, it’s essential to find a basis of appreciation in order to fully obtain an understanding of the subject being discussed. • If a student is not willing to put forth an effort to appreciate the matter discussed, then he won’t be able to find the true meaning of the matter or a connection between it and other essential elements in education.

  3. ColeWonderment and Awe • A person not experiencing the reaction of wonderment and awe cannot admire the full complexity of the object at hand, for the person may be approaching the subject with expectations, hence delineating a different response than that of the person without expectations. • This creates a critical skill to be used in life in that philosophically a person can only enjoy life through admiration, appreciation, and wonderment and awe.

  4. TessWonderment and Awe Quotations • “A great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.” - Tommy John • If someone says an individual cannot do something, then it makes them want to try. Once they have achieved the goal, it becomes wonderment and awe.

  5. LindseyWonderment and Awe Quotations • “When you are face to face with difficulty, you are up against discovery.” - Lord Kelvin • When one is up against a challenge, one is on their way of discovering wonderment on things they never thought they could do.

  6. SelenaFinding Humor • An indispensable and beneficial life skill that can be used in an awkward setting is being able to find humor in a situation. • When a person is surrounded by their friends, they show objection to embarrassment. • A person doesn’t have to be subjective to the incompetence of embarrassment, for if he conquers the skill of finding humor in situations, he will be able to turn a mistake into entertainment for himself and others.

  7. CharlieFinding Humor • For example, say a student is embarrassed by a bad grade, he may find some humor in receiving a poor grade by displaying the grade and joking himself with his friends. • Philosophically this skill is very useful for coping with failure or loss.

  8. ColeFinding Humor Quotations • “What happens is not as important as how you react to what happens.” - Benjamin Disraeli • When something happens whether it’s good, bad, or embarrassing doesn’t matter more than ones reaction.

  9. TessFinding Humor Quotations • “The true test of character is… how we behave when we don’t know what to do.” - John Holt • How one handles a situation is their true test of character.

  10. LindseyApplying Past Knowledge to New Situations • Once a person has logged a fact into their memory they are unable to forget it, for they may think that it has been forgotten, but the mind still contains remembrance. • Putting this into affect, that person should be capable of employing past knowledge to the situation at hand in order to learn about this situation. • This is greatly affective in school, for when a student seems to be inept to learning new material, he should use past material in order to learn anew.

  11. SelenaApplying Past Knowledge to New Situations. • When a person is arriving at a situation of which he is unfamiliar with, the action of applying past knowledge in order to perceive or execute the situation correctly is something that should commonly be used. • The unutterable power of a human-being's memory is quite brilliant in the way that new information is stored through repetitive learning.

  12. TessApplying Past Knowledge to New Situations Quotations • “Successful people aren’t born that way. They become successful by establishing the habit of doing things unsuccessful people don’t like to do. The successful people don’t always like these things themselves; they just get on and do them.” - William Makepeace Thackeray • If one wants to be successful, then one must do what others might not want to. This sets one aside from the other people who take the easy way out.

  13. SelenaApplying Past Knowledge to New Situations Quotations • “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” -African proverb • If one doesn’t experience some rough life choices, then one will not learn anything for the future ahead.
