Who we are German Australian Business Council is part of Australian Business in Europe, a voluntary non-political international business networking organisation, that has independent branches in Australia and across Europe. We cooperate with, and are supported by, the Australian government, including the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, the Australian Embassy in Germany, the Consulate General and the AHK. Lynette Wood, the Australian Ambassador to Germany and Richard Leather, Australian Consul General and Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner in Frankfurt, are our patrons. Supported by

  4. Our mission The German Australia Business Council is a business network created to foster long term relationships between Germany and Australia. Aimed at advancing both countries and individual pursuits, we communicate and catalyse opportunities through business networking and other activities.

Our objectives Facilitate contacts between German and Australian business people Provide briefings on latest industry and policy developments in Australia Bring together the Australian and Business communities to celebrate key Australian events, e.g. Australia Day, Melbourne Cup Showcase research excellence and innovation Profile members and their services through events, website and newsletters

  6. Our strategy The German Australian Business Council focuses on building relationships through business networking and other activities between Germany and Australia. In order to achieve our Mission, our strategy has three focus areas: Connections Member Services Communication

We will achieve this through: Delivering high quality, industry-relevant business events with our members Liaising with industry and business chambers and related regional and federal government departments in Germany and Australia Incorporating functions to create a deeper appreciation of both countries

We will achieve this through: Actively engaging with members to deliver relevant networking events and receive member referrals Actively engaging with friends to increase membership base Enhancing the value proposition for corporate and individual members Providing access to commercial intelligence, policy updates and business leader discussions Actively engaging in policy issues in a German- Australian context

Our strategy (cont’d) Communication Keeping members and friends up to date with business-relevant news and events in relation to Australia and Germany, as well as other German Australian Business Council networks. We will achieve this through: Targeted use of digital media Our forums and events Streamlining communication and optimising administration Promoting benefits to existing and new members Leveraging off the 20thanniversary of the German Australian Business Council in 2017

What value the German Australian Business Council offers Network of business contacts with an interest in Australian/German linkages Updated information and market intelligence Interesting event program in Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin Opportunity to profile your business to a targeted audience Access to education and research representatives Celebration of Australian-German cultural and business ties The German Australian Business Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Außenhandelskammer (AHK) Australien in October 2013, in order to leverage benefits for members of both organisations

  11. Networking Events are a core focus The German Australian Business Council holds numerous networking events each year. The types of events include: Australia Day Luncheon Networking Events and Business Luncheons Ambassador’s Dinner Oktoberfest events Sector specialised events, e.g. site visits, cross border succession and asset structuring and innovation forums In 2017, 20 events took place in Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin. In 2016, 18 events took place in Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Stuttgart. We partner with corporate members to tailor networking opportunities.

Australian-German Relationship The Australia-Germany Advisory Group handed down its report in November 2015 “Collaboration, Innovation and Opportunity” which has identified ways in which to broaden, strengthen and deepen the relationship between Australia and Germany Australia and Germany share strong ties in innovation and research with more than 500 partnerships and cooperation agreements existing between Australian and German Universities Germany was the largest source country of European students enrolled to study in Australia in 2016. (DET Selected Higher Education Statistics – 2016 Student data - https://www.education.gov.au/selected-higher-education-statistics-2016-student-data) Germany is Australia’s fifth largest source of imports, selling goods and services to Australia worth A$16.3 billion in 2016-17. Australia’s total goods and services exports to Germany were worth A$4.3 billion in 2016-17. Both with a 5% growth trend over the last 5 years.

  13. Australian-German Relationship(cont’d) Germany is the sixth-largest destination for Australian investment abroad. The level of investment in Germany at the end of 2016 was worth A$65.8 million. Germany’s investment in Australia was valued at A$38.8 billion A range of Australian companies have a large presence in Germany. Sonic Healthcare and CSL Behring, both in the medical sector, employ around 5000 and 2000 people respectively Some of the largest German employers in Australia are Allianz, Hanson Australia (Heidelberger Zement), BOC (Linde), Siemens, Bosch, DB Schenker and Deutsche Bank Source: Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website
