  1. Overview • Basic functions • Features • Installation: Windows host and Linux host.

  2. Basic Functions • VMware Workstation works by creating fully isolated, secure virtual machines that encapsulate an operating system and its applications. • The VMware virtualization layer maps the physical hardware resources to the virtual machine's resources, so each virtual machine has its own CPU, memory, disks, and I/O devices, and is the full equivalent of a standard x86 machine.

  3. Features • Supporting Windows, Linux, NetWare, or Solaris x86 in fully networked, portable virtual machines - no rebooting or hard drive partitioning required. • Running multi-tier applications, application updates, and operating system patches on a single PC. • Accelerating help desk resolution of end-user problems with a library of pre-configured virtual machines.

  4. Features • Reducing hardware costs by 50-60%. • Reducing costly configuration and set-up time by 25-55%. • Supporting 32- and 64-bit host & guest operating systems. • Supporting wireless networking capabilities for Linux hosts. • Including VMware Player.

  5. Installation: Windows Host • Host O.S.: Windows 2000, 2003, and XP. • Guest O.S.: Red Hat and SuSe. • Check hardware and software requirements at http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/intro_hostreq_ws.html • Log on to your Microsoft Windows host as the Administrator user or as a user who is a member of the Windows Administrators group. • If you are installing from a CD, from the Start menu, choose Run and enter D:\setup.exe (D: is CD-ROM drive).

  6. If you are installing from a downloaded file, click Start menu -> Run, browse to the directory where you saved the downloaded installer file and run the installer. Click Next to dismiss the Welcome dialog box. Installation: Windows Host

  7. Select the Yes, I accept the terms in the license agreement option, then click Next. Installation: Windows Host

  8. Choose the directory in which to install VMware Workstation: don’t install on a network drive. Then click Next. Installation: Windows Host

  9. Select the shortcuts that you want the installer to create: Desktop, Start menu, and Quick Launch toolbar. Then click Next. Installation: Windows Host

  10. Click Install. The installer begins copying files to your computer. Installation: Windows Host

  11. Enter your name, company name and serial number, then click Next: Your serial number is on the registration card in your package. Installation: Windows Host

  12. Click Finish. The VMware Workstation software is installed.

  13. Installation: Linux Host • Host O.S: Red Hat and SuSe. • Guest O.S.: • Check hardware and software requirements at http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/doc/intro_hostreq_ws.html • Log on to your Linux host with the user name you plan to use when running VMware Workstation. • Open the shell interface. • If you install from a CD-ROM disc: place the CD-ROM into its drive and change the current directory to CD-ROM drive.

  14. Installation: Linux Host • If you install from a downloaded installer, change the current directory to the directory containing the installer. • Use Tar command: 1. Copy the tar archive to a temporary directory on your hard drive, for example: cp VMware-<xxxx>.tar.gz /tmp 2. Change to the temp directory: cd /tmp 3. Unpack the archive: tar zxpf VMware-<xxxx>.tar.gz 4. Change to the directory you want to install the software: cd VMware-distrib

  15. Installation: Linux Host 5. Run the installation program: ./vmware-install.pl 6. Accept the default directories for the binary files, library files, manual files, documentation files and init script. 7. Answer Yes when prompted to run vmware-config.pl. • Use RPM command: 1. Run RPM specifying the installation file. For example: rpm -Uhv VMware-<xxxx>.rpm 2. Run the configuration program from the command line: vmware-config.pl

  16. Installation: Linux Host • Press Enter to read the end user license agreement (EULA). You may skip it by pressing the space bar several times. If the Do you accept prompt doesn't appear, press Q to get to the next prompt. • Accept the default settings for remaining prompts. • The configuration program displays a message saying the configuration completed successfully.
