  1. Centro Nacional de Biotecnología – CNB-CSIC Contribution to NA4 (Biomed)

  2. Strategy • To serve as the “bridge” (“connecting plug-in”) between the community of Structural Bioloy (SB) and their use of EGEE Infrastructure • Among the many topics in SB, we start from one of them, as it is “Three-dimensional Electron Microscopy” (3DEM). • Why? • Because we have a defined user community behind: The Network of Excellence on 3DEM • Because our institution is one of the work leaders in methodological advances in this area • Because we have a good critical mass of Engineer Knowledge • JR Valverde, D Garcia, A. Solano, NEW EGEE ENGINEER JOINING NOW

  3. What exactly to do (I)? • We are identifying KEY problems in 3DEM that would attrack many users to a good Grid Solution because: • They really solve key concrete biological problems • They are very compute intensive • They are subsceptible to Grid-type parallelization • The community that could use them to create top biological knowledge, publisheable in top scientific papers, referencing EGEE in the dozens of labs and it is well known • Open to collaboration with other groups/communities to solve specific problems in Structural Biology

  4. What exacty to do (II)? • We have identified one concrete problems that fulfill all previous requirements (under consideration in Nature): Three-dimensional reconstruction of flexible macromolecules by maximum likelihood • We will port it to the EGEE infraestructure, remaining close to the users so that the final application will be really attractive • Other similar problems will be coming after this first one

  5. Estimated compromise • To have in one year the first tool in scientific production • We have to define a good certifacation policy, correct within EGEE standards, and at the same time easy for the experimental user.
