  1. Ice Station by Matt Reilly

  2. Mysterious Murder of Scientists in Antarctica (possible suspect is one of the scientists and killer whales?) • Unknown metal object in the ice (possible UFO space craft) • NATO as a front to allow America to keep eyes on other countries and vice versa • The other countries are tired of being the little brother of the US

  3. US troops in the vicinity receive the distress signal from the station and their leader Shane Schofield aka Scarecrow takes control of the situation… or so he thought • French scientists from a nearby station arrive to help, except they are not who they say they are… • All heck breaks loose in the station as French troops storm the station to retrieve the UFO…

  4. Numerous individual battles ensue and Scarecrow comes out on top… • Only to be betrayed by one of his own (an Intelligence Convergence Group) • He is left for dead and then mysteriously is saved by a strange elephant seal • Then after handling the traitor situation a British team of soldiers storm the station…

  5. More and more action and battles take place and Scarecrow comes out on top! • The British blow up the surrounding ice to make the station and the UFO object float out to sea as an iceberg with a tracker so they can recover it out @ sea. • Antarctica is an international area with many countries claiming a plot, which is why the other NATO countries were going after the UFO so that the US could not get their hands on it. • The UFO was described as _____________! • Nothing was ever even mentioned of the events that took place @ the NATO meeting. • The traitor ICG organization got stunned!

  6. Ice Core Research • As the snow is deposited on top of the ice sheet each year, it traps different chemicals (components of air during that time period) which are dissolved in the ice. The ice and extra impurities hold information about the Earth's environment and climate at the time of deposition. • Miller-Urey Experiment

  7. Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry • The ice is vaporized, separated using chromatography, and then run through a mass spectrometer (similar to a spectrophotometer but uses mass instead of amount/color of light transmitted). • Can be used to figure out atmospheric components and amounts, identify unknown substances, test for the presence of drugs in someone’s system

  8. Killer Whales • Killer whales are usually quite tame towards humans • There are cases where the whale has attacked humans (notoriously trainers @ seaworld) • Some “research” says they just don’t like the taste of humans… prove it! • They normally eat dolphins, seals, sea lions, fish, squid, walrus, other whales http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=killer-whale

  9. Killer Whale Elephant Seal • Taxonomy • Kingdom:Animalia • Phylum:Chordata • Class:Mammalia • Order:Carnivora • Family:Phocidae • Genus:Mirounga • Species:Miroungaangustirostris • Classification: • Kingdom:Animalia • Phylum: Chordata • Class: Mammalia • Order: Cetacea • Suborder: Odontoceti • Family: Delphinidae • Genus: Orcinus • Species: Orcinus orca

  10. Liquid Nitrogen Grenades? • The idea is the grenade goes off and liquid nitrogen is flung everywhere. • If it were to land on you it would cause your blood cells (and other cells) to simple explode due to rapid expansion as water expands when it freezes. • Sounds really cool ;) however doesn’t exist • Liquid nitrogen BOILS @ -320*F • It would even have the chance to land on the enemy’s skin • Ice bullets won’t work either because the explosion to propel the bullet out of the gun causes the ice to melt before it leaves the barrel. http://science.wonderhowto.com/inspiration/hand-fully-submerged-liquid-nitrogen-ouch-right-0119577/ http://victoria.tc.ca/int-grps/books/techrev/bkicestn.rvw http://blog.eag.eu.com/general/how-to-build-a-volcano/

  11. Ice Water Body Shock • A dip in some ice water causes varying physiological responses… • You gasp for air, hyperventilate, and due to vasoconstriction to conserve heat, and possibly your heart may not receive enough oxygen for the muscles to continue pumping (cardiac arrest)! • Only way to recover from cardiac arrest is CPR and an AED. • CPR provides oxygen and your hands are used to circulate the blood • AED delivers an electric shock to the heart to mimic what your nervous system would be doing to start and maintain the heartbeat rhythm. http://beyondcoldwaterbootcamp.com/4-phases-of-cold-water-immersion

  12. Leg Bitten OFF by Killer Whale FAKE: From TV Show Fringe • If body part is severed it may be possible to reattach • Clean it, bag it, and store on ice (should be ok for ~18 hours) and depending on the amount of tissue death, surgery may work • Surgeon will • cut off/remove any dead/infected tissue • Reshape bones and muscles to fit prosthesis • Seal off blood vessels and nerves • Sew skin together at cut site • Phantom limb pain may occur because the sealed off nerves may still send signals to brain that recall “pain” memories and hence felt as pain. http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/guide/phantom-limb-pain http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/definition-amputation

  13. Body Armor • Body armor can be made to stop bullets and knife stabs • Specifications depend on how much $ you will spend • Can still get injured, but could save your life • They are designed to spread the impact over the entire surface as to minimize trauma http://science.howstuffworks.com/body-armor2.htm

  14. Body Armor Protection Levels

  15. Liquid Body Armor! • Still has Kevlar (a fabric) involved • However it requires less layers • Regular vests have 20-40 layers making it really heavy (more than 10 pounds) • The Shear-thickening fluid acts a lot like the mixture of cornstarch and water • When you apply pressure to it, it will behave like a solid. http://science.howstuffworks.com/liquid-body-armor1.htm

  16. Liquid Body Armor • There is another version of this that uses magnetism to align tiny iron particles in the fluid surrounding the Kevlar. • Here the trick would be using electric current to provide the magnetism and you would flip a switch to activate it if you were in a dangerous situation… http://science.howstuffworks.com/liquid-body-armor2.htm

  17. Mutated Elephant Seals • Growing teeth from being exposed to radiation from an old nuclear reactor in the UFO/Secret Airforce plane • Actually radiation has been shown to slow tooth growth • Amelogenesisimperfecta is the result of mutations in genes that help to code for enamel (the main component of teeth). • Leads to smaller teeth that can be weaker and break easily

  18. Quiz • Add a five question quiz that the class should be able to answer after listening to your presentation! • Also don’t forget to type up your book review
