  1. Life is our life’s work. Pfizer in Wales An Introduction The National Assembly for Wales has developed a devolved agenda that is unique to Wales. Progress of the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) in implementing the recommendations of the Task and Finish Group on Prescribing has been notable. The publication of a strategy for Older People and the Audit Committee report on procurement of medicines in primary care are other examples. Pfizer can support many of their ideas, however, some proposals are controversial and may bring the Assembly into conflict with the UK Government and the pharmaceutical industry. In response to this unique environment, Pfizer has evolved new structures, processes and positions. Our aim is to build trust and maximise the opportunities to jointly address the challenges faced in Wales. Welsh Initiatives As a member of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, Pfizer plays an active part in the Wales Industry Group (WIG). WIG representatives are involved in the development and implementation of National Service Frameworks in Wales. We welcome this joint working around service delivery as it can only benefit the NHS and patients in Wales. We hope that companies, such as Pfizer, will be seen as natural partners in important areas where there is common interest, such as, medicines management. The Assembly has highlighted older people as a key policy area. Pfizer has also recognised that the ageing population is a fundamental challenge to governments, society and industry in maintaining and improving health services. Research shows that the challenges ahead are so serious that solutions can only be found through collaborative partnerships involving government, industry and other organisations. Pfizer is ready for this. We welcomed the inclusion of the pharmaceutical industry in the AWMSG and on the NHS/Industry Forum. Industry involvement in pharmaceutical strategy will lead to a better understanding of each other’s objectives and will build trust and enhance the decision making processes. We would like to see this extended to the All Wales Prescribing Advisory Group. Equity of provision is a key principle of Welsh government policy. Whilst recognising the Assembly’s desire to form Welsh solutions to local problems some issues are best addressed on a UK basis if patient welfare is to be protected, for example, having a single UK price for medicines. Through innovative products Pfizer is making an important contribution to improving the health and well being of people in Wales. The company also upholds the highest standards of governance and probity. We believe that with these characteristics we are well placed to enter into constructive partnerships with the Assembly Government and the NHS in Wales.
