  3. Physical characteristics • Size- 17-24 in. • Pelage- three layers • Appearance- brown • Made of- beaver, duck, otter • Feet- webbed Male/female differences- male bigger, male has stingers on ankle

  4. Distribution • Australia • Habitat- lakes, rivers, streams

  5. Conservation status • IUCN- least concerned • Popular trend- unknown

  6. Reproduction • Happens in water • 2-3 babies • Happens in August- November • 2- 4 years old to breed

  7. Parental care • 3-4 months • Babies stay warm in between tail and body of mom • Mom feeds baby until it can get food

  8. Longevity and mortality • 12-15 years • No difference between female and male • 17 years in captivity

  9. Seasonal patterns • Behavior does not change • No migration or hibernation • Undergoes torpor

  10. Diet • Bugs, Insects • They eat by putting the food in their mouth along with rocks and storing them in their cheek pouches and slowly consuming it.

  11. Predator • Hawks, eagles, owls, crocodiles, water-rats, pythons, goannas, foxes • They do not affect the conservation status

  12. Humans • They used to kill • Zoos, captivity, experiments • They do not affect them anymore

Fun Facts • Scientists thought it was a hoax at first • Male has stingers on the back of its heels • Beaver part- tail • Duck part- bill and feet • Otter part- body and fur • Can stay underwater for 2-3 minutes • When threatened can stay under for 10 minutes • Strangest mammal • One of two mammals that lay eggs
