  1. Welcome to 2nd GradeMs. Vivaldie Smith &MS. Zineb

A few things about me: • 13th year in education • A parent with elementary, high school and university age children. • Kindergarten to 6th grade. • Specialize in special needs and disabilities • ASM since Novemeber of 2015 • Have 4 children, 1 in University in NJ and 3 at ASM, 1- elementary, 1 Middle, 1 High School

Classroom Expectations • Follow class rules and routines • Treat others with respect • Complete homework • Outline of what we’ll be learning for the week • Homework will be sent home daily in order to monitor student’s progress • Based on skills we learn that day • Graded and returned on Fridays • If homework is not completed students will be given another day to complete PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS HAVING DIFFICULTIES • Participate in class discussions • 6 Pillars of Character

  4. This year, we’re using ClassDojo to build our classroom community and to share daily behavior points We’ll build a positive culture where students are engaged, encouraged, and love learning! All parents are part of our classroom community, seeing what we’re learning!

How we’ll use ClassDojo • As a teacher, I will: • Dojo points for behavior • Post Class Story • Photos and videos of classroom activities • Send private messages to keep you in the loop! • Studentscan: • Share classwork on their own digital portfolio • Only family members will be able to view their work

  6. Rewards Students can use them for: • Arts and Craft • Homework Pass • Extra Recess • Extra Library • Extra Computer time • Fun Homework • Pick a Partner Pass • Mystery Prize • Tablets and Ipads

  7. Schedule • Students began French class 2x weekly.

  8. Skills Strand • Mechanics of reading (how to read words) • Phonics instruction • Decoding written English • Spelling, grammar, and writing skills Topics • Fairy Tales and Tall Tales • Early Asian Civilization • Ancient Greek Civilization • Immigration • Civil Rights and Human Rights • Cycles in Nature • The Human Body: Building Blocks and Nutrition • Insects

  9. Math facts - Sprints • Application (applying strategies) • Concept development (patterns in math) • Measurement • Probability and Statistics • Geometry • Algebra. WE USE LOTS OF HANDS ON and MANIPULATIVE Receive helpful tips on how to assist your child in math per Module.

  10. ELA and Math Test and Quiz • Outline sent home and posted on Plus Portal • Testing doesn’t allow students to study • Based on Read-alouds and comprehension • Lot’s of new vocabulary • Skills learned in class and HW activities • Grade will be posted on Plus Portal • Math based on how students apply strategies learned in class and practice for HW • RDW

Resources and Staying Connected • Raz-Kids, IXL, Classdojo, Plus Portal, ASM email, 2A Website http://asmg2a.weebly.com • Students are to read for at least 15 minutes daily and complete IXL 3 to 4 times a week. • Forms sent home 2 Fridays ago • If you need help to login, let us know, we can help! • Tutoring needs, let us know! • Please check out our Weebly account at http://asmg2a.weebly.com
