Interview: formal meeting in which people obtain information by asking questions • Interviewer: person who conducts the interview • Interviewee: person who responds to the interviewer’s questions • Types of Interviews: • Job: person reviews applicant’s qualifications for a job • School: interviews an applicant for schooling past high school • Informative: gathers information about a topic from an expert What is an Interview?

Step One: Read the Advertisement Carefully • Understand the type of job being advertised • Understand the qualifications you must have • Step Two: Preparing a Résumé • Résumé: brief account of educational and job experience. 1 page! • Include these sections: • contact information, education, work experience, honors and involvement, skills, and references • Cover letter is recommended Preparing to be Interviewed

Step 3: Scheduling an Appointment • Give name and purpose of appointment • Be specific and confident • Give contact information and best time for appointment • Step 4: Researching the Job or School • Know history, purpose, goals, and specific job responsibilities • Interviewers see you as worth their time. Step 5: Knowing What to Say • Include general and specific information • Qualifications: What makes you a good candidate • Goals: What will you achieve with this job • Interests: How do you spend your spare time • Step 6: Knowing What to Ask • Ask questions to help you with your decision! • Prepare questions ahead of time Preparing to be Interviewed

  6. Find an advertisement for a job you’d like to have. Cut it out and tape it to a blank piece of paper. Under the advertisement, write a description of the type of job being advertised and the qualifications you must have. Homework!
