  1. Pictographs

  2. Introduction A pictograph is a way of showing data using images. Each image stands for a certain number of things.

  3. Advantages of using Pictographs • The data can be easily analyzed and interpreted. • The pictures and symbols help us to understand better.

  4. Scaling in the pictographs If the data is very large, then it is very difficult and time consuming to represent each of the items in a pictographs. In such cases, we can use one picture to represent many of the same kind. This is called scaling.

  5. Drawing pictographs • Example 1: • Number of apples were sold at the local shop over 4 months as shown below: • In January 10 apples were sold • In February 40 apples were sold • In March 25 apples were sold • In April 20 apples were sold

  6. Drawing pictographs Solution: Considering the above data, we have 10, 40 and 20 apples are all multiples of 10 and 25 is the multiples of 5 Choose a scale such that we use fewer pictures to represent apples sold. We can choose one of the following scales 1 full apple ------------------ 5 apples 1 full apple ------------------- 10 apples Scale chosen: One full apple represents 10 apples and one half apple represents 5 apples .( we chose this as it takes lesser pictures)

  7. Cont…… Here is a pictograph of how many apples were sold at the local shop over 4 months:

  8. Interpreting Pictographs Let us interpret the data given in the picture: In January, we have 1 apple = 1 full apple = 10 apples In February, we have 4 apples = 4 full apples = 4 x 10 =40 In march, we have 2 and half apples = 2 full apples and one half apple = (2 x 10) + 5 = 20 + 5 = 25 In April, we have 2 apples = 2 full apples = 2 x 10 = 20

  9. Example 2: At a fundraiser students from Government school were selling ice cream cones. That school headmistress recorded their sales information in the pictograph below. • Look at the pictograph and answer the following question: • Which day did they sell the most ice cream cones? • Ans: On Monday they sold most ice cream cones. • We have 8 full cones and one half cones = (8 x 6) + 3 = 48 + 3 = 51 cones most means maximum

  10. Cont… Look at the pictograph and answer the following question: 2. Which day did they sell the fewest ice cream cones? Ans:On Sunday they sold fewest ice cream cone. 1 full cone = 6 cones

  11. Cont… Look at the pictograph and answer the following question: 3. Did they sell more cones on Tuesday or Wednesday? Solution: On Tuesday we have 5 full cones = 5 x 6 = 30 cones On Wednesday we have 8 full cones = 8 x 6 = 48 cones More cones were sold on Wednesday. (Ans)

  12. Cont… Look at the pictograph and answer the following question: 4. How many ice cream cones did they sell on Saturday? Ans: On Saturday the sold 24 cones. We have 4 full cones = 4 x 6 = 24 cones.

  13. Try These Draw pictographs for the following data given and also interpret the data.

  14. 2. Akash and his friends were trying to see who could catch the most bugs in a day. They recorded their information in the pictograph below Look at the pictograph and answer the following questions: Who caught the greatest number of bugs? Who caught the fewest number of bugs? Who caught more bugs, Ashok or Veni? How many bugs did Anitha catch?
