Characteristics and Speed of Sound Waves

Learn about the characteristics of sound waves, including their compressional nature and dependence on a medium. Discover how the speed of sound waves varies based on the type of medium and its temperature. Explore why the flash of a firework is seen before the sound of the explosion. Engage in a Sound Stations Lab to deepen your understanding of sound wave properties.

  1. WAVES A wave is a rhythmic disturbances that transfer energy through matter or space.

  2. Sound What are the characteristics of a sound wave?

  3. Sound Fact #1 Sound waves are compressional or longitudinal waves.

  4. Sound Fact #2 Sound originates from vibrating objects.

  5. Sound Fact #3 The vibrating objects transfer this sound energy by direct contact with other matter (usually air).

  6. Sound Fact #4 Sound waves are classified as mechanical waves and they require a medium to transfer the energy.

  7. Sound Fact #5 Loudness or volume is determined by the amplitude of the sound wave.

  8. Sound Fact #6 The energy disturbance travels in concentric waves.

  9. Sound Fact #7 After the sound wave travels through the medium, the medium remains unchanged.

  10. Sound Sound waves travel by one particle hitting another. The closer the particles are together, the easier and quicker the energy can be passed.

  11. Sound Fact #8 That means sound travels best in solids, next best in liquids, and the slowest in gases.

  12. Sound The SPEED of Sound Waves Depends on… A.Type of medium B.Temperature of the medium

  13. Sound Type of medium: *Liquids and solids transmit sound waves better than gases *The particles are closer together in liquids and solids making the transmission of energy easier

  14. Sound Temperature of medium: *Higher temperature -- faster speed *Sound will travel slower in cold air on a winter’s day than it will travel in the warm air of a summer’s day

  15. Can you explain why the flash of a firework is seen before the sound of the firecracker explosion?

  16. Sound Sound travels slower than light: *Sound travels at 344 m/s through air at 20 0C * Light travels at 300,000,000 m/s

  17. Sound Stations Lab • You are to move from one station to the next • Complete the task noted on the station cards • Record your observations in your journal for each station • LAB GRADE
