  1. Workplace Injuries August 2012 Mini Departmental Safety Representative Training

  2. Workplace Injuries A workplace injury can happen at anytime. However, it is important to understand why they occur and the best way to combat these type of injuries. Let’s look at the three most common causes of workplace injuries that occur at the Health Care Agency. • Repetitive Motion Injury • Slips, Trips, and Falls • Lifting

  3. Types of Repetitive Motion Injuries Repetitive motion injuries occur doing the same repetitive tasks while using the same muscle groups. Some injuries include: • Carpel tunnel syndrome • Ganglion Cysts • Chronic Pain

  4. Combating Repetitive Motion Injuries • Take periodic mini breaks • Stretch frequently • Attend Ergonomic training • Ensure you are using computer equipment such as your keyboard in a neutral position • Ensure office equipment is close and within reaching distance to avoid overreaching common used items

  5. Slips, Trips, and Falls The highest rate of injury that is reported throughout HCA is directly related to an accident from a slip, trip, or fall. Common Causes of a Slip • Wet or oily surfaces • Occasional spills • Weather hazards Common Causes of a Trip • Obstructed view • Poor lighting • Clutter obstructing a path

  6. Slips, Trips, and Falls There are three types of falls: Falls on the same level • Slip or trip immediately precedes fall to floor or walkway Falls to lower level • Falls are from platforms, docks, ladders, steps or stairs Jumps to lower level • An intentional jump from one level to another • Employee jumps off ladder, dock, equipment

  7. Combating Slips, Trips, and Falls Prevention is one of the best ways that a HCA employee can combat an injury from a slip, trip, or fall. These activities include: • Keeping walkways clear from hazard or obstructions • Promptly cleaning spills or leaks when identified • Watch for loose cables or cords • Ensure that cabinets or drawers are closed, especially drawers at the bottom of a desk

  8. Lifting Lifting in the workplace is one of the major root causes for work related injuries to the back. Lifting injuries occur due to the following: • Improper Lifting • Heavy Lifting • Twisting

  9. Combating Lifting Injuries • Ensure that employees that are “reasonably expected” to lift items over 10 lbs have been trained in proper lifting techniques.

  10. Responsibilities • Employees are responsible for reporting an injury to their supervisor as soon as it occurs. • Supervisors are a very important part of the reporting process. They are required to ensure that an injured employee’s needs are met by providing the proper documentation to ensure timely and accurate reporting of all workplace injuries.

  11. Regardless of how an injury happens, the symptoms from a workplace injury do not simply clock out at 5p.m.! Learning and using proper techniques to reduce workplace injuries will ensure we continue to be safe and healthy here at HCA.
