  2. A. Napoleon’s Empire • Napoleon created a huge empire between 1804-1812 • Napoleon’s invasions made people aware of their loyalty to their own nation – they did not want the French to rule them

  3. B. Napoleon’s Downfall Napoleon made 3 very costly mistakes: 1. Continental System: tried to blockade Britain from trading with Continental Europe Problem: Hurt Napoleon’s economy more 2. Peninsular War – lost 300,000 troops in Portugal & Spain 3. Invades Russia in 1812 Went horribly – Napoleon invaded with over 500,000 troops and only 10,000 survived Caused his empire to start to fall apart

  4. With his army weakened, his enemies attack and defeat Napoleon • He is captured and exiled to Elba in April 1814

  5. France will then have a Constitutional Monarchy • They will be ruled by King Louis XVIII, the brother of King Louis XVI

  6. C. 100 Days • Napoleon will try to make a comeback in the summer of 1815 • He will rule for 100 days, but is again defeated by the British at the Battle of Waterloo

  7. D. Exile and Death • Napoleon was exiled to St. Helena after his 100 Days • He would remain there until his death on May 5, 1821 • King Louis XVIII will rule again

  8. E. Congress of Vienna • A meeting in Vienna to create peace and stability in Europe after Napoleon’s defeat. • Five “great powers” met • Russia, Prussia, England, France, & Austria

  9. Goals of the Congress of Vienna: • To surround France with strong nations • To create a balance of power • Establish legitimacy – restoring monarchs to their thrones

  10. Results of the Meeting: • No war between Europeans for 40 years • Conservatives gain power but Democratic ideals continued to spread and led to additional revolutions in 1830 and 1848 • France was a constitutional monarchy but became weaker while Britain and Prussia were stronger
