  2. Why We Are Here Today • This presentation has made its way to you as the result of our belief that you can help us at MAT to continue to make available automotive-based educational opportunities to Missoula teens. PO Box 1121, Missoula, MT 59806

  3. Economic Support in a High Growth/High Demand Profession • In the spring of 2005, a group of Missoula citizens came forward to address a concern within the Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS). For over two decades, automotive vocational classes have not been part of the MCPS curriculum beyond a small engines course. Our organization emerged out of the view that this is a serious void that leaves many Missoula teens without means to develop skills and pursue interests that are essential to maintaining interest in high school academics for many students. We are a relatively new business with predicted growth and need economic support for our limited budget. Missoula Automotive Technologies is the only vocational training program within engine training, and is not offered elsewhere in the community of Missoula or surrounding areas, the nearest automotive educational facility is located in Havre MT, 315 miles away from Missoula. We think that it is important that education opportunities are offered to students at an early stage especially when data show a high interest at high school level.

  4. Basic Information • Montana Automotive Technologies (MAT) is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that has no payroll, and consists of all community volunteers. • MAT has agreements with public schools and workforce development to train high school students so they can earn credits and underprivileged men and women in auto mechanics. • We furnish the facility ourselves, maintain mentors for 2 or 3 students at a time, and we take care of the tools and equipment for project vehicles. • But, we would greatly appreciate updated tools and equipment to allow the students to learn a trade in a smarter and safer manner. • It is very important to know that MAT is self-funded and relies on grants and donations to keep the doors open, contrary to the misconception that Missoula County Public Schools provides funding. THEY DO NOT!

  5. Why Are We Unique? • We are different than other organizations of this nature in that we have mentors working closely with students and have partnerships with local shops for hands on internships or job shadowing. • We give the students exposure to many fields so that the student can explore various career paths. • We provide advisory boards for the students made up of local businesses and community leaders. • Unlike many organizations of this nature, this program exposes students to all aspects of the automotive industry which includes but not only: bodywork, engine / transmission, suspension, interior, electrical, part ordering and even more.

  6. What We Are Founded On • To Provide automotive vocational opportunities to Missoula area teens. • To make Missoula area teens more aware of their importance to the local community. • To pair teenagers with local mentors in a cooperative environment determined on an appreciation for the local communities and automobiles.

  7. Why Our Model Is SuccessfulMany high schools across the nation are getting rid of auto mechanics because of the high cost to train the studentsWe are successful here at MAT because: • Our model teaches automotive basics • We allow students to receive exposure in all automotive aspects to discover the career path they want to pursue, whether that be in automotive careers or others. • We teach proper shop and safety procedures, how to operate tools, and how to effectively work with others in a teamwork environment. We promote camaraderie • These students get the opportunity to work in a real shop including auto, RV dealers, motorcycle shops, parts houses, and even new car dealers involved). • Students here at MAT will get a chance at real employment opportunities. Our program helps emphasize the fact that we can head the student to the career path they would actually desire rather than any automotive career that they possibly could be hired for. This prevents employers from hiring a former student that would find they don’t want this path. This is important because it can cost up to $50,000 to hire and train and employee only to find that the new employee does not desire this career path.

  8. The 4 Programs MAT Offers to Help • High School Classes • Workforce Development • Community Service • After School Activities

  9. High School Classes • For the first time in twenty years, Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS) is once again offering automotive mechanics courses. We have a memorandum of understanding with MCPS. But, remember, they offer us no funding for these classes whatsoever. Students receive high school credits and are exposed to various aspects of auto repair. Mentors work with them in a small ratio (1 mentor per 2 or 3 students) so there is hands on learning experience and problem solving.

  10. Workforce Development • We have a memorandum of understanding with Montana Workforce Development. We offer a three-month program which focuses on two things. • 1. We accept unwed mothers on welfare for a three-month period to give them office experience. • 2. We teach Exploring Automotive Careers to unwed mothers on welfare and other disenfranchised people. We have even had and helped rehabilitate convicted felons. In fact, MAT has been used as an example and this rehabilitation has been copied by other programs in New York, Wyoming, Arizona, and California.

  11. Workforce Development Part 2This program is in three parts 1. Textbook instruction with tests 2. Hands on experience in our shop 3.Working in an outside shop for one month And last, job shadowing in one of our outside businesses

  12. Community Service • Montana Automotive Technologies has a memorandum of understanding with Missoula Correctional Services. Our program accepts kids who have been sentenced to do community service. Here, they not only perform cleaning duties but also have the opportunity to work with mentors on project cars.

  13. After School Activities • Working as a positive outlet, Montana Automotive Technologies offers one night per week for kids to come and work with mentors on cars.

  14. Fun & Games! • Restoration Project: A 1976 GMC Truck is soon to be restored and completed and shown around town. This 4WD truck has been refurbished by our students while being overseen by their mentors here at MAT. Local businesses help with our students restorations projects as well. $5.00 raffle tickets to win this restored GMC are for sale and/or we would appreciate help by getting a book to sell. Call Alan (406-370-4365) or Gene (406-360-6373) if you are interested and willing to help. • Demolition Derby (August Missoula County Fair): We plan on running 3 this year. One 1976 Chevy Suburban truck sponsored by NAPA, and 2 in the Car Derby including a 1964 Chevy and a 1967 Cadillac. These 3 vehicles were rescued of Pacific Scrap and had to have engines reworked to run and now can make money for our school. Call Alan (406-370-4365) for a sponsorship and/or advertising donation. • THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO HELP US HELP OUR KIDS HERE IN MISSOULA, MONTANA

  16. MAT is a model non-profit organization • We would not be here promoting out foundation today if we did not truly believe we are helping others, mainly Missoula area teens. Montana Auto Tech is being copied by other organizations in places such as New York, California, Arizona, and Wyoming. They are basing their programs off MAT, the only problem is that they have the funding, which we struggle with.
