  7. DO POLICE HAVE SPECIAL POWERS DURING THE G20? • No they have plenty of powers to protect people already • Yes they need special powers because the summit is a high security meeting

  10. SPECIAL POWERS? • IF YOU ARE COMING INTO OR ARE INSIDE THE PINK AREA POLICE HAVE THE POWER TO ASK YOU: • your NAME, AGE AND ADDRESS • to show PHOTO ID • WHY you are COMING INTO or ARE INSIDE the Declared Area

MORE SPECIAL POWERS • Police can search you and your belongings if you are IN, ENTERING Or LEAVING the Declared area • Search includes: • Your bag, personal items (phone) • Running a scanner/detector over you or getting you to walk through a scanner/detector • Removing your outer clothing (eg shoes, jackets, hoodies) POLICE DO NOT NEED A REASON TO SEARCH YOU

  12. More search powers… • If police think you are carrying something you shouldn’t they can also frisk you or strip search you • Police cannot strip search a child (under 17) without an independent person being present to support the child – unless immediate search is needed to protect safety

WHAT ITEMS CAN’T I CARRY IN THE DECLARED AREA? • you CANNOT carry PROHIBITED ITEMS if you are in the declared area unless you have a REASONABLE EXCUSE • PROHIBITED ITEMS INCLUDE anything that could be used to HARM SOMEONE or DISTURB THE MEETINGS • Police can take the item from you and keep it until the end of the summit

  15. WHERE CAN YOU GO DURING THE G20? • Anywhere except where the meetings are • Anywhere you like as long as you don’t disrupt the meetings • Anywhere except special designated places

WHAT ARE THE RESTRICTED AREAS? • Brisbane Convention Centre – and some nearby streets • Southbank Piazza • Treasury Casino • RNA Showgrounds • Suncorp Stadium • Southbank Cultural Precinct (museum, GOMA, State Library) – ONLY ON SATURDAY 15TH NOVEMBER • These hotels • Rydges, Pullman, Hilton, Sofitel, Novotel, Marriott, Royal on the Park, Stamford, Sheraton, Gambaro

WHAT CAN THE POLICE DO TO ME? • Police can: • Hold you until they can confirm your identity eg if you don’t have photo id • Order you to leave the area and to stay out until the end of the summit (17th November) • Charge you if you don’t follow a direction eg to stand still in a certain place while they search you • Charge you with possession of a prohibited item or take it off you if you don’t have a reasonable excuse for having it • Charge you if you are involved in an unlawful demonstration/protest

What if I get caught up in a protest? • Even if you are not participating you could be rounded up by the police • TIPS • BE AWARE of your surroundings • LEAVE the area if you are worried something is happening • WATCH-OUT for your friends • FOLLOW police instructions (including over loud-hailers or PA system)
