  16. Top 5 Bridge Statements by Importance AND Priority

  17. Next Steps/ Implementation** from 2009 ** • Short-and long-term research needs for pavement preservation and bridge preservation • Presented for AASHTO Subcommittee on Maintenance • Develop tracking mechanism on TSP2

  18. Outline of Discussion: • Briefing on the Existing Roadmap • Motivations for Development • Development Process • Results • Discussion of Research & Tracking • Discussion of Roadmap Update Needs

  19. Who is Doing the Research? • NCHRP / TRB: AASHTO Subcommittee on Maintenance Pavement Technical Working Group TRB Committees AHD18 and AHD20 Research Needs Statements • Synthesis Studies / Research Examples: • Chip Seal Best Practices (2005 - Gransberg) • Microsurfacing (2010 - Gransberg) • Chip Seals (2010 NCHRP 680 – Shuler)

  20. “20-7”

  21. Pavement Preservation Research? • FHWA Research Office of Asset Management • Performance Evaluation of Various Rehabilitation and Preservation Treatments, • Zheng Wu, Ph.D., P.E., Jonathan L. Groeger, Amy L. Simpson, Ph.D., P.E., R. Gary Hicks, Ph.D., P.E. Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center - Dr. Nelson Gibson – ALF testing Federal Lands: • FLH Study on Polymer Modified Emulsions (Voth/King, etc)

  22. Ability of pavement preservation to interrupt aging and top down cracking • Chip Seal? • Slurry Seal? • Thin HMA Overlay • 4.75mm Superpave

  23. Top-Down / Bottom-Up CrackingAccelerated Aged Sections

  24. Pavement Preservation Research? • State DOT / University Research • CA, TX, IA, NC, MN, MI, UT, etc, etc • SHRP-2 Research • Private Company Research • Asphalt Suppliers (Colas, Western Emulsions) • Polymer Suppliers (Kraton, BASF) • Technology Providers (Road Science)

Project Management for Large Projects

  26. Technology Project Delivery Balanced approach Successful Renewal

  27. Bottom Lines: • Lots of Research Activities in Preservation! • Most are Initiated to fulfill specific client needs. • The Roadmap is a Planned Set of Research Ideas to Fulfill the Overall Agency and Industry Needs, and Advance Preservation as a Whole. Discussion Questions: • What research do we need to track? • Who will do the tracking, and HOW?

  28. Outline of Discussion: • Briefing on the Existing Roadmap • Motivations for Development • Development Process • Results • Discussion of Research & Tracking • Discussion of Roadmap Update Needs

  29. Do We Need to Update the Preservation Roadmap? Has there been a change in focus within the preservation community that is different than the climate in which the Roadmap was developed? Energy Use / GHG Emissions / Sustainability? Budget Constraints Driving Preservation Decisions More? Increasing Focus on Performance Measures? Sufficient Progress in Tackling Problem Statements to Warrant a Review and Update Process? • HMA Roadmap is revisited by FHWA and NAPA every couple of years: • Goal: “Keep the Preservation Roadmap a Living Document” ???

  30. Preservation and Asset Management won’t bring short-term glory, but they will bring long-term satisfaction!
