  1. The Division of China A WC presentation by Mr. Hess

  2. World War II • The civil war between Communists and Nationalists continued until Manchurians kidnapped Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-shek) in 1937. • They convinced him to give up the fight against the Communists so that they could unite against Japan, who was poised to attack.

  3. World War II, cont. • As a result, China resisted Japan throughout WWII, despite the capture of many major cities and huge casualties.

  4. After World War II • WWII only united the two sides temporarily. • Soon after Japan’s defeat, the civil war resumed. • By this time the Cold War had begun. • The USSR supported the Communists while the US supported the Nationalists. • Due to reports of Jiang’s (Chiang’s) corruption and the belief that he could not win, the US withdrew support.

  5. Communist Victory • As a result, the Communists routed the Nationalists in 1949. • Jiang (Chiang) fled to Taiwan, where he and Nationalists set up the “Republic of China.” • Taiwan would eventually become a successful democracy.

  6. Communist Victory, cont. • Mao Zedong and the Communists established the “People’s Republic of China.” • Even today, both governments claim to be the legitimate government of all China.
