  2. Bullying…. • Is aggressive behavior that intends to cause harm or distress • Usually is repeated overtime • Occurs in a relationship where there is an imbalance of power or strength

  3. Cyber Bullying Defined “Bullying through e-mail, instant messaging, in a chat room, on a website, or through digital messages or images sent to a cell phone.” Kowalski, Limber & Agatston, 2008

  4. What’s Different About Cyber Bullying? • 24/7 and the invasion of home/personal space • The audience can be very large and reached rapidly • People who cyber bully may attempt to remain anonymous • The profile of the bully and target

  8. Mathews County Acceptable Use Policy Unacceptable Uses Submitting, posting, publishing or displaying any obscene, profane, threatening, illegal, or other inappropriate material. Cyber bullying, threatening, or using the computer system to disrupt the school learning environment. Network Etiquette Each user is expected to abide by generally accepted rules of etiquette. Mathews County Acceptable Use Policy • Use Of Appropriate Language • The use of obscene, lewd, profane, threatening or disrespectful language is prohibited. • Users shall not post or print in electronic or paper form, personal contact information, including names, home, school or work addresses, telephone numbers, or photographs, about themselves or others unless they have received written permission form that person or the posting and printing meets all district and school policies and regulations. School Rules On Cell Phone Use • Must be turned off and kept in the student’s locker or car during the school day. • Any cell phone that is visible or used during the school day will result in the cell phone being confiscated and the phonewill only be returned to a parent. • For any subsequent violations of the policy, the student will be suspended for one day. • The use of video cameras or video phones is prohibited during the school day.

The 5 R’s • Recognize –people online are not always who they say they are and take note of the bully’s screen name or e-mail address. • Refuse –to open or read any message from a cyber-bully. • Record –document the attempts of cyber bullying for law enforcement officials. • Respond –by ignoring the bully at first and never respond to a bully out of anger. • Report –cyber bullying to the internet service provider, the school (if school related), a trusted adult, or law enforcement to stop it immediately.
