5. The Aim of the Initiative: Reduce the MMR and NMR in Gezira State By at least 50% within five years (2005-2010) AND Extension(2010-2015).

47. The safe motherhood project is a clear example of a number projects that the medical school has initiated to improve the health status of the rural communities. This particular project, among other things, initiated the trainingof village mid-wives and facilitated their absorption into the government funded health system. This initiative has led to a remarkable reduction in the maternal mortality ratio and in the infant mortality ratio in Gezira state. The safe motherhood project is a classic example of how a socially accountable medical institution has positively responded to an identified societal need in a holistic manner and with measurable impact.
