  2. Learning Object Metadata • What is a learning Object ? “A learning object is defined as any entity -digital or non-digital- that may be used for learning, education or training” (IEEE LTSC, 2002) • Metadata It is important for accessing, disseminating and reusing learning objects. matching stringscapturing the meanings and purposes of learning objects • Learning Object Metadata (LOM) Dublin Core IMS Meta-Data IEEE LOM

  3. IMS LOM and IEEE LOM • IEEE LOM originated from a joint proposal and specification submitted by IMS and ARIADNE in 1998. • IMS Learning Resource Meta-data Specification IMS Learning Resource Meta-data Information Model IMS Learning Resource Meta-data XML Binding Specification IMS Learning Resource Meta-data Best Practices and Implementation Guide. • The latest version is IMS Meta-Data v1.3 Public Draft specification It uses IEEE 1484.12.1 - 2002 Standard for Learning Object Metadata (IEEE LOM) as the IMS Learning Resource Meta-data Specification v1.3 Information Model. IMS LOM =IEEE LOM

  4. IEEE LOM (IEEE 1484.12.1-2002) • Approved by the IEEE Standards Association On June 12th 2002. • The IEEE LOM element set hierarchical “tree model” • The basic metadata structure defined in IEEE LOM includes nine categories General Life Cycle Meta-Metadata Technical Educational Rights Relation Annotation Classification • An example

  5. Root to leaf "tree view" of meta-data (IMS Global Learning Consortium, 2004 )

  6. Conclusion IEEE LOM /IMS LOM • is a officially approved standard by IEEE and accepted widely. • is flexible and has better adaptability and interoperability. • is customized widely, CanCore, SingCore. • can be guided by IMS Meta-data Best Practice Guide for IEEE 1484.12.1-2002 Standard for Learning Object Metadata. • can map to Dublin Core. IEEE LOM is promising and important.
