  4. Samples and Tests

  5. Purity analysis • carried out on one whole sample by 14 laboratories • on two subsamples by 5 laboratories • Difficulties: • Results no based on sum of weights of components (3 laborotories) • Pure seed definitions No. 47 and 51: • distinguishing between winged seeds and seeds without wing (3 laboratories - no, other - big variability) • Counting mistakes, rounding

  6. Weight determination Counting the working sample - 5 laboratories Counting replicates - 14 laboratories Difficulties: One completelly wrong result, weight not calculated from replicates, coefficient of variation not given or not correct calculated, rounding

  7. Germination (conifers) Quite uniform results in category of normal seedlings at the end of the test but very inconsistent in first counting (after 7 days) Big differences in categories of the ungerminated seeds (hard, fresh, dead, empty) Difficulties: wrong counting or rounding, results not rounded

  8. Facultative tetrazolium and germination tests with beech seeds High variability in results among laboratories, among the four replicates of the test Average germination (No6 = 37%, No7 = 28%) much lower than the average viability in the TZ test (No6 = 58%, No7 = 57%) Difficulties: not correct counting of results, rounding, exceeded tolerances among replicates, not finished test

  9. Conclusions for next FTS Committee activities: Purity: to revise PSD of conifer seeds Germination:to revise the definition of „normal seedling“ TZ and germination test of dormant seeds: discuss in detail testing and evaluation procedures (substrates, evaluation of normal seedlings) Results support the FTS Committee goals: to revise the Tree and shrub seed handbook to organise this workshop with practical training
