  2. Lesson Objectives • I will get the opportunity to consider the positive and negative impact of the FPTP system • I will get the opportunity to participate in a group to evaluate and report on the impact of the FPTP system

Task • Look at the effects of the FPTP system on the next slide • Your task is, in groups of 3 or 4, to decide whether they are positives of the system or negatives andexplain why • You can of course say they are positives and negatives, but you must always explain your reasons • Once you have completed this task, you will get a chance to put forward your views as part of a discussion

  4. Effects of the FPTP system • Majority governments are usually formed • Only one representative is elected from each area(single member constituencies) • Smaller parties are usually excluded • By-Elections can take place • FPTP creates safe seats • Results are rarely proportional • Not all votes count
