  1. The Martin Luther King Day Challenge Presented by Dena Shonts Director of Service-learningcentral Piedmont Community College Created by Jenny Koehn Associate Director of Student Programs Appalachian Sate University

  2. What is the MLK Challenge? Essentially the MLK Challenge is a day of service events, but with a twist. Students sign up to participate in the event not knowing what’s in store for them. Students are put into random teams and given their “challenge”. “Once given their challenge teams are given basic instruction, their seed money and their final goal…the rest is up to them” (Koehn, 2004).

  3. Develop the Challenges Be Creative! • How many sites do you want to start off with? • Contact agencies you have relationships with. • Make sure the projects are challenging. • Can your students get them completed by the end of the day? • Communicate with your project sites multiple times before the big day!

  4. Recruit Site Leaders What is a site leader? • Ask faculty or staff who have a good relationship with you. • You will need one site leader per site. • Hold one meeting before hand to go over information about the event and their role as a site leader.

  5. Publicize the Event Get the word out! • Posters • E-mails • Student newsletters • Service-learning instructors/classes • Clubs and organizations • Faculty and staff newsletters • Banners

  6. Food Determine the Food for the Day • Breakfast • Make it easy! • Continental is always good. • Lunch • Let the students make their lunch. • PB&J, bread, cookies, fruit, chips and water. • Dinner • Go easy of yourself. • Pizza, soda and a birthday cake is an easy way to go!

  7. Transportation • Does your institution have a car pool? • Are your site leaders willing to drive? • Could your students car pool?

  8. Team Packets What’s in the packets? • List of challenges, who the site leader is and their cell phone number. • Agenda for the day. • MLK Quotes (keep them inspired!) • Donation letters. • Donation report forms. • What it means to be a site leader. • Direction to and from the site. • It’s always good to have the name of the agency coordinator and a phone number for that individual with the directions. • Depending on the driving situation you may need multiple sets of directions.

  9. Team Packets Continued… What’s in the packets continued… • Icebreakers. • Sample reflection activities. • Seed money. • Emergency contact numbers. • Keys . • Disposable camera. • Pocket Notebook and pen.

  10. Keepsakes Make the Event Memorable • Tee-shirts • Coffee mugs • Hats • What else?

  11. Day of the Event • Registration • Who will be handling registration? • What’s your system for registering people? • How will you put students into teams? • Opening Ceremonies • Highlight the life and teachings of Dr. King • Closing Ceremonies • Each group reflects on their day • Be creative!

  12. Budget How are you going to fund your MLK Event? Example Budget from CPCCs 2008 MLK Challenge: • Pizza: $200 • Breakfast, Lunch and Misc.: $441 • Tee Shirts: $572 • Reflection Materials: $73 • Seed Money ($120 per team x 7 teams)$840 • Banner: $34 • Pictures: $70 • Lunch for Site Leaders (pre-meeting) $70 Total: $2,300
