  3. Curriculum • Reading Streets- Adopted Reading series • Engage New York /Eureka Math • Second Step- Social & Emotional Learning skills (Weekly Lessons) • STEM- Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (FOSS) (Smartboard, RAZ) Blocks/Gears Numbers/Shapes Ipads Adding/Subtracting

Reading Program • Reading Streets • infuses both science and social studies within fiction and non fiction stories • 75 minutes of literacy based centers • incorporate technology with computers, I PADS, Smart Board • include phonics, writing, and reading activities • Daily small group reading instruction

Math Program • Eureka Math/Engage New York • Infuses fluency activities, interactive notebooks, hands on manipulatives and problem solving skills. • 45 minutes whole group/small group instruction.  • Assessments include teacher observations, one on one assessments, district required assessments.

  6. Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills DIBELS • Brief, but powerful, measures of the critical skills that underlie early reading success • K-3 Benchmark assessments are given three times per year • Results are used as indicators for students being on track to learn to read

  8. Other Assessments • District/Quarterly Assessments- Letter Recognition, sounds recognition, decoding words, rhyming, and name writing • Weekly Phonics/Spelling Tests-Begins Nov. Most students have letters and sounds mastered by early December • DRA’s- Level 4/6 by the end of the year.

What parents can do at home! • Play rhyming and segmenting games together • Have your child practice saying the names of lowercase and uppercase letters quickly • Have your child practice saying the sounds of letters quickly • Read, Read, Read! • Be a model and read to your child • Read with your child • Listen to your child read and encourage them to use their reading strategies when they get stuck • Have your child retell what he/she just read • Practice sight word lists sent home by teacher

Weekly Homework • Initial homework daily • Please leave homework in your plastic bag • Family Times Book • RAZ Accounts • Reading Strategies • Using your reading finger • Taking a picture walk • Story retell • If they get stuck helping with the sounds of the letters, not giving the whole word. • Math homework comes home on Mon. and Thurs. nights but if your child is struggling with a certain skill you may receive homework on other nights as well.

  11. Data Notebooks • * Students use their data notebook throughout the day to focus on their own personal learning needs and goals. • Data notebooks are updated often and students graph their progress on a classroom graph.

  12. Coupon Book • Coupon books will come home next week in your child’s homework bag. Please remember these are skills that need to be mastered by the end of the year. Please take your time and try several times to ensure mastery before sending in each coupon. I can read each of these words in 3 seconds or less.
