UKBA the new rules and SMS – were/are you ready? • Julia Mann • Head of Registry • Kathy Robinson • Assistant Director of Admissions • University of Leicester
How we got ready for SMS at Leicester • Admissions was the first priority because: • this is where the greatest amount of CAS requests will come • it is the simpler process • We knew we would also have to manage visa extension requests but most of these came through before SMS was introduced
Impact on processes and procedures • A project was initiated, led by Admissions with a wider project team including: • Registry, Graduate Office, Finance, Welfare, International Office, English Language, Study Abroad and IT Services • We are SITS users • We had two days of consultancy from SITS in November and then developed in house • We are using the bulk data upload (BDT)
Impact on processes and procedures • Admissions have undertaken a review of all communications with international students • English Language provision has been brought into central services • We had to work out how to record the tuition fee paid, including any discounts/scholarships • We have a huge increase in the number of queries at the admissions stage relating to visas • We have had to appoint new staff in Admissions, Welfare, Registry and Finance
Over to you for discussion • In groups please discuss: • How has your institution managed the introduction of SMS? • What would you have done differently? • What discussions have there been in relation to absence reporting procedures?
