  3. What is Social Media? • Social Media is publishing technologies that bring people together, share information and build communities. • You don’t create a community, you connect communities.

  5. Misconception #1: • Social Media is just for teenagers and college kids. FALSE!

  6. Misconception #2 • Social Media is not for professional use. FALSE! • The Proof: Social Media usage in the 2008 presidential election.

  7. Social Media in the 2008 Election • Blogs: 500 million blog postings mentioned Obama. Only about 150 million blog posts mentioned McCain. • MySpace: Obama had 844,927 MySpace friends VS McCain's 219,404. • Twitter: Obama had at election time, a total of 118,107 followers. John McCain had 4,942 followers.

  10. What is a Blog? • A Blog is an online journal or log. • The most successful Blogs are the ones that keep people interested. • Blogs welcome open communication.

  12. What is a Wiki page? • A "Wiki" is a piece of web software that allows a group of users to add, edit and reorganize web content.

  14. What is Facebook? • Free to join! • Not just for teenagers. • 18-24 year olds is 40.8%, which is down from 53.8% six – last year. • The 55 and over demographic is up with a 194.3% growth rate.
