  1. Japanese American Internment Rocio Garcia

  2. Choosing a Topic • Difficulty choosing a topic • Japanese-American Internment v. Human Rights topic • Settled for the internment. Why? Easier one to start with…plus there’s human rights in there too…

  3. What am I looking for? • Assess the role of the government in the media • Life in the internment camps • Violations of human rights • Abridgement of Bill of Rights, ‘misuse’ of the laws, re-interpretation of the Constitution • The U.S. on the international stage

  4. Welcome to the World of Research • It’s a lot more work than I thought! • OskiCat • Databases • Journals • The Bancroft • Microfilm/microfiche • JARDA and calisphere

  5. Bumps along the way • Missing the first Bancroft visit • Crutches… • Visiting the special libraries • Law library: one of my targeted collections to research • Discouraging trip • Too much information!! • Too many things to look at • Couldn’t decide on what was relevant and what wasn’t • Do I need it? Or do I just think it’s cool to know?

  6. Successes of Research • Found JARDA on Calisphere • Lots of photographic evidence • Presentation on how to use photographs in your research helped out a lot • Bancroft library • Has a lot of documents that are of use • Example-photographs, letters, formal legal documents of the internment • Oral History • Lots of oral history to look through • Interviewing an internee!

  7. Oh and by the way… • While researching for Japanese-American internment experience, I was also researching a human rights topic for another research paper • All the techniques and the resources I learned in this Decal helped out in writing it • I GOT AN A!!!!!!!! (minus, but still an A, right? Whatever, it still counts!)
