  1. Did You Fast To Me? To Me? Zechariah 7:5

  2. Background to Zechariah’s Statement • God’s people had been fasting during the Babylonian Captivity and want to know if they should continue (7:1-3) • Zechariah reveals their true motive: insincere fasting for themselves and not for God (7:4-5; see Lev. 23:27) • God reveals the true motive for fasting (7:8-14) • Why do we come together to worship? Why do we assemble? Why do we engage in the “five acts of worship”? What is our motive?

  3. Why Do We Worship? • To be seen of men (Mt. 6:1ff; 23:1ff) • To blindly follow tradition or ritual (Mt. 15:1ff; Acts 17:23) • To compare ourself with others (Lk. 18:9ff) • To compete with others (Acts 5:1ff; 1 Cor. 12-14) • To grudgingly fulfill a requirement (Mal. 1:13; 3:8-9; 2 Cor. 9:6-7) • To do what we want (Col. 2:23)

  4. Why Do We Worship? • To display what we have (Jas. 2:1-9) • To go through the motions without love (Rev. 2:1-5)

  5. Worship is God-Centered • Worship is to be focused on God – “for me … for me” (Zech. 7:5) • Worship is for God’s honor and glory (Psa. 95:6; Jn. 4:24) • Preaching / teaching: God’s word, not the classroom / activities, power-point, preacher eloquence, etc. • Singing: God’s name, not the song leader or four-part voices • Lord’s supper: God’s sacrifice, not who takes it or how • Contribution: God’s work, not the amount • Prayer: God’s will, not beautiful words
